how many "family heirloom" cars out there?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by moparsled, Jan 14, 2006.

  1. My dad passed away in '98 and I inherited his roadster. I spent a couple years freshening it up, it still needs upholstry. I know my dad's sitting next to me every time I'm behind the wheel. It'll go to my son.

I'm STILL waiting on the heirloom '56 TBird. I've been on my Dad for years, but he won't part with it...not yet. And I don't blame him. He's the second owner having bought it in 1960. The '57 TBird we built together from boxes. OK, OK, I was just a kid, so he built it, and I just gophered tools.

I tell my Dad, "spend all your money, burn the house to the ground. But the TBirds are my inheritance. That's all I want." He says he wants a viking funeral in the '56. But I talked him down to getting creamated and kept in the '56 ashtray. :D

    here are a couple pics:

    First time post...long time reader.

This is my 62 Falcon Futura.
It was purchased new in January of 62 by my great grandmother and only driven 28k miles. she passed on in the early 80's. the car went to my grandfather who used it to drive to golf every morning. he decided i should have the car about 5 years ago with 59k miles on it. it is on its second paint job and second interior but most everything else has been left original (except for maintenance).

my dad had a 1970 chevell malibu with a 350 when i was born up until i was 4. it had headers into glasspacks and sounded so good. i stil have a scar on my head from when he was doing a burnout in front of my uncles house and i was standing in the front seat (awsome parenting) well when he left off the brake to leave it stalled and i fell and hit my head on the radio and broke the knobs. the car got sold to my uncle where it sat in his backyard till it rotted into the ground and then got put in his garage to never see the light of day again.

my other uncle has a 57 chevy four door his dad bought new. its got a 283 in it now with the laquer paint and same interior, mint. its been parked in the back of his garage since i was 1 and has not moved, its still got wide whites on it and the stock hubcaps. last time i talked to him he told me he wanted to make it a two door convertible. i called him a jackass. now we dont talk. but seriously, what a jackass.

I'm a little jealous of a lot of the family cars in this thread. I got this 46 COE from my grandpa. It was the family farm work truck, surviving an engine fire and being struck by a slow moving train(!). One of my earliest memories is sitting between my gramps and my dad, driving down the road maxed out at 50mph, the flathead screaming through the dual exhaust with glasspacks.

Heres the beater thats been in the family since new which would have been 28' or 29'. Its a graham paige sedan and its still sitting in my grandmothers garage...still waiting for one of the grandkids to pull it out and dust it off. I have aspirations of puttin a new drivetrain and drivin it as is.

The picture is of me in the mid eighties as we were pullin it outta the chicken coup it had been stored in at my great-aunts house.

My '36 was my Dad's first car in '64 and he paid $150 for it. He paid $180 for the paint job that's on it now... back in '64.

  11. Got some of my Dad's old altered. My foster brother had an old BSA that belonged to him but he died and didn't leave a will. Damn it.

I pulled my great grandfathers 64 Impala out of the barn about 6 months ago. Its was a bone ass stock 57 thousand mile car. I have since put some different shoes on her, and an HEI ignition. Its a 283/powerglide car with factory air and steering. Shame of it is that she is a 4 door. But she is a great cruiser and starts up every morning.

  14. This Murray "Lancer Wagon" was my wife's pedal car in the mid-1960's.

My Father-in-law stashed it in the back of his garage until ~2000, when I dragged it out. I learned to weld (poorly) and do bodywork/paint while resurecting it. My wife stiched up the "upholstery".

Now our daughter maintains it and takes it to cruise nights.

I have my dads' 53 Buick Special 2dr post. It is the first car I remember seeing. When I was born I was brought home from the hospital in it. The car has been sitting neglected for a long time but is still complete. Would like to do it as a memorial to dad. He has been gone two years and I miss him.

I lost my dad back in November of 2005. I got both of his '32 fords. Trust me when I say these cars mean a lot but I would rather have my father.

My Dad gave me his 1973 Peugeot 504 when I got my licence. It was an ugly heap of shit so I sold it.

I wish he was a rodder but at least I still have him.

Not quite"in the family" but close:

A close friend of my family since the early 50's had a car he only drove in the summer - to get the mail on the "main road" , to town once a week or so to get groceries, and to "the lake" - the local swimming hole.. In the 50's I rode with him often as a young kid to "the lake" or to get the mail etc. . In the 60's I blossomed into a mechanic and was able to help the aging gentleman with the car- fixing the generator, brakes and other minor repairs. He was impressed when I fabbed up a directional signal arm from a bicycle part after he put in a ditch one night and broke the directional and the horn ring.
The 60's came and went, I moved from home and I visited the gentleman, now elderly, on occasion and he would joke about the bicycle part I added to his car many years earlier. In 1975 he passed on and many people wanted the car, A 1950 Chevy fleetline DeLuxe with 26,000 miles on it and never driven in winter. His widow insisted that I get the car as she knew I would "take care of it like always".
I still have the car and it now has 37,000 miles on it. Aside from a clutch @ 1979, Fresh paint @ 1981 and some minor repairs, it is exactly as it was when I rode with the original owner so many years ago.

PS My car and its story is in Hemmings Classic Cars JAnuary 2006 edition in the "Drivable Dreams" article. I have wanted to brag about this here on the HAMB but it a little OT!.

My dad gave me his '40 Dodge convertible. He wasn't the original owner, but it's still understood that I will be tracked down and killed if I get rid of it.

  22. My Grandpa bought it new. I drove it first when I was 14. It was restored (with Laquer) in 1990. These pictures were taken in 2002. My brother currently has it at his place, I drive it when I visit.

My part time driver is a 1966 Dodge Dart Wagon. The car was bought new by my father-in-law. He needed to trade up to a bigger car because he and the missus had just adopted my wife. The old Dart has driven from Washington state to Minnesota many times and to Cali once or twice. The original slant six is getting tired but still runs good. My father has Grandma's '57 Ford Custom fordor sedan (also bought new) which I'm hoping to get back on the road this spring.
