well people i need help again i just got a new set of moulding clips for my 55 customline the problum is the clips just fall out when i put them on they are real lose any help will be very much appreciated. i had old spring type clips before but a want to go back to the original clips when i get it back from the paint shop thanks BeerMoney (aka| Bobby
Bobby, If you have some of the Dum Dum putty, (looks like grey modeling clay) stick a little ball of it on each side of the clips to anchor them into position on the moulding. Once the mouldings are in place you can remnove any excess that squeezes out. Paul Selfe.
Post a picture of the clips and the holes it goes into. I have some of the old clips from my Ford and it looks like there is some red hard sealer that helped hold the clips or made it water tight.
When I restored my 62 galaxie i bought "REPRO" clips from Carpenters > I spent 55.00 and they would fall out of the hole.I got spring wire type clips from" Restoration Specialties".They have been on for 9 years now!
Aside from the falling off problem, when you do get to ***embly, put a ring of caulking around each stud before attaching to the car. You need to get a non hardening sealer on those or they will leak. 3M caulking strips are perfect for it because of the smaller diameter of the strips, but a good household variety may be easier to find. Many body supply/paint supply shops carry the 3m strips. If the clips you're talking about are the little propeller shaped ones, make sure you load them on to the strip the correct way. They should be on there so when you tighten the nuts, it turns the clip tight against the moulding, not so they want to loosen/turn out/away from the moulding when you tighten the nuts.
Bobby, it is hard to explain, but you have to spread one of the 2 tangs that go into the sheet metal hole. Start by making sure all the clips are oriented the same...I think there are about 20 per side. Insert the clip and while holding it in place, take a pair of pliers and grab the tab in the center and gently bend it in one direction. This should spread the two tangs and firmly hold the clip in place. With practice it becomes easy. Make sure you have the correct clips. I used B21066-1 from T-Bird Products. Get a few extra as you will probably destroy some.
Oh, and there are only 2 stud with nut type retainers per side; the very front and rearmost positions. All others are the clips noted above. The stainless snaps over those.
I'll shoot some pictures of my clips. Like 55Brodie says, you have to spread the tangs in some of them. Probably the ones that go in the square holes if you have those.
if you look up DC under fasteners he lists the tool for the clips.when I put mine on over 30 years ago I made do with a pair of pliers I ground down.once you see it you can do as I did
I found the pliers on Carpenter's site. Now I understand how they go on a bit better. http://dennis-carpenter.com/molding-clip-pliers/p/TL-300/
