Can you use a y block 12 volt generator in an 8ba if you cut off the mounting ears, and drill a hole in the case for the pin in the flathead stand?

Yep you can do it. I just did it with mine. I also fitted a pulley with a fan mount from a '38 flathead to get me more clearance fitting my 8ba in a 31 roadster

Cool thanks for the info. I have a 53 merc flatty in my 36 with an 12 volt pusher fan. I don't want to spend $300 on one of those power gen speedway jap units.

I may play hell finding a 5/8 pulley for it though.

Thought you had a 8BA? Just use the pulley that came with the 6-volter.

The 8BA 6-volt generator has the same armature dimensions as the later 12-volt armature. The pulley and fan should swap right over. No taper on a post-48 generator, it uses a woodruff key to keep it in place.

If you need a pre-'48-style pulley you will need to find either a very rare piece (I've only stumbled on one at a swap meet in the last four decades) or machine an early out to the dimensions of the bigger armature. I needed a pulley with a fan mount on the front for my '32 Ford application, so I did the machine-work option. After it cracked because the casting wasn't thick enough, I installed the very rare pulley from my stash. Mine came from a larger size generator probably installed on a truck that needed more juice than a regular truck (firetruck?).

I've got a y-block generator on my 8BA that is in my '32. All I did was use a wide pulley from a 6-volt generator.

A wide pulley from an 8ba would be a pickup or a 49 Merc part, right?
