Customs When is Ugly, To ugly?

That's not ugly, that's just a little work away from being cool.
Body looks reasonably straight, many possibilities come to mind, but it's yours now, so I'll watch out for a build thread.

 

Yeah that does kinda grow on ya. I'd ditch the stake sides and wash it and then take another look

 

Consider just fixing it to the condition that it was in 50 years ago...so folks can see how things were done back then. Might take less work, and wouldn't look as "nice", but you'd be saving a rare piece of automotive history.

Yep. No matter what you do, its still a Dodge and those were not used for traditional street driven hotrods

 

I'd put a camper on the back of it like this.

 

Those 2 pictures reminded me of a mustang hatchback that used to roll around town with an over cab camper.

I do see some potential in it with the right bed. Like was mentioned already, keep it simple, clean it up so it looks decent, cruise it

Joking aside surly it could be reworked into a more pleasing vehicle. Definitely was purpose built. and the base looks solid. Dodge styling in those years was albeit not pretty were a little ahead with the loss of fat fender look with the cars.​

 

I can see a Scotty Trailer behind it, but, Can't do full-on camper, if it pans out as being a decent run'r.. I have No idea what an automatic of this Vintage does w/age? I will be finding out, but I do have a 27 Dodge 3-window that would look BooBie's on the tow bar going to the track behind this...the plot mite think'n..

 

I was likin' the stake sides, all it needs is a couple of pigs in there!!

It looks badass, I bet you could even flip it for a small but useful profit. I like how you just wiped a little bit of the dirt off the windshield and called it good. Half the fun of that would be watching the reaction of fellow motorists, lol.

 

I like it. Ditch the stake sides, lower the bed to line up with window line, swap some wood for steel. Not sure on the "cab back", get some steel on it, whether to keep it flat or use a radius into the back depends on what parts are available. Could try to use a pickup back for a radius or use a flat panel with beads rolled in for a flat back. Looks like there's enough paint left to cut some in some areas and buff up the rest.

I think the work done on that car/truck is very good. You have to remember when that work was done, most home shops didn't even have any power tools to speak of. Most did not have a torch.

 

If the cab back is going to be redone in steel, there's an opportunity to do something interesting in the gap between the bottom of the B-pillar and the front of the rear fender. Perhaps an integrated step of some kind? Perhaps continue the cab back at the angle of the rear line of the side window? I wouldn't know if that would work until I've drawn it.

I agree that the bed needs to come down to pick up the beltline trim below the side window better. The bed also seems to be tilted up to the rear: ideally the top of the bed should have a slight downward curve which picks up the curve of the front fender tops.

 

You just need the back half of a 46-54 pickup cab to turn it into a nice looking Ute.

Now that I slept on it, The bed height is Key, it only looks like 2" or so down would at least give it a "little" Flow... Since the bed's going to come off , To get the cab enclosed, That would be one of the easiest way's to apply a little lipstick..

 

Might be a Power Wagon box with a shop built tailgate.

I don't know, I don't think it is too bad....maybe just loose that top row on the bed rack and you are good. LOL

 

I think it is kind of cool. You might hop over to the photoshop thread and ask one of the gurus to work a little magic on it.
