I tried posting this earlier but couldnt find it so here goes again... I took the back window out of my 63 chev sedan and without thinking pulled off all the clips that hold the trim on. Now I have a new set on their way but does anyone have a diagram on where they should all go?? Or how their spaced out etc?? Thanks!
you oughta be able to tell by lookin at it. they gotta be the same as 65's, or at least similar. theres the flange with the screw hole that'll contact the window sill area. if i remember, the clip part oughta be perpendicular to the window opening if i remember right, but it isn't too hard to figure out. there oughta be screw holes in the window sill though to tell you where they go. otherwise, break em up how it'll makes sense given whatcha got.
there should be little pins that they slide down on from factory if they are gone pop rivet the pins on =if I remeber right along straight edges up from corners about 2 inches spaced about 4-5 inches apart been awhile since I done it tho set chrome down on flats to get the right height for clips with gl*** out==hope this helps
Thanks would really appreciate that. And thanks to the other guys, like you said, shouldnt be too hard to figure out but it would be easier with some advice or pictures.
Maybe this will help some, took pics and measured where the clips went on my buddies 64 when we tore it down.
what the hell was i thinkin... i do remember the post that the clip goes over now. might have been the bottom front gl*** (cowl piece) trim clips that had screws p*** thru em or something. i know my 65 had both somehow. maybe the bottom of the back gl*** had screw on type, i remember because i had to salvage them from both of the cars we were using to build the one. sorry for the confusion, man. looks like you're in pretty good shape now though with pictures and everything!
Not in the ***embly manual and it doesn't go into any detail in the 63 shop manual supplement. You have to go back to the 1961 shop manual and it has a diagram there. The way I understand it the 62 and 3 shop manuals were just supplements to the 61 manual. Shown on pages 14-46 and 14-47 and refering to fig. 70. showing 4 different kinds of clips and their locations. Now for the bad news is I have no way of scanning this to post it or e-mail it. Maybe you could repost this asking for a scan from a 1961 Chevy shop manual. I have no idea what your availibility is there but these manuals (reprints) are common in the states.
Be aware that these are different from the hardtop clips. I think thats what hiredguns pics are. The ones from the manual I posted are for the sedans both 2 and 4 door models.
Thanks alot guys, really appreciate the help. Its going back in tomorow so I'll check back here in the morning otherwise I'll have to use what I got here and in my head. She'll be right mate
there four things to on 55-64 GM rear windows 1. 90% of the replacement clips differ from the originals (lately I've been getting original style) the top of the clips have a nub or bump that I hit on the grinder to keep from getting small bumps in the stainless when installing 2. the pinch weld (the flange that the clips attach to) is two pieces of metal spotwelded together. the inside lip is usually knotched where the clips go (makes it easier to install) I just run my finger along the insde lip to feel the knotches. the bottom lip usually doesn't have the knotches. I lay one of the bottom stainless pieces and mark the center, then put two clips in about four inches each side of center, then one clip four or five inches from each corner, then add two more evenly spaced along the bottom. A total of eight clips across the bottom. three on each side and depending on the model and year eight-ten across the top 3. use a butyl based sealer (auto parts stores or gl*** shops) if you look at the clips installed you notice a round hole (sometimes they had screws 55=57 chevs had one clip in each bottom corner to keep the molding from popping up) that hole is to seal the clips BEFORE the gl*** is installed. after the gl*** is installed you use the same sealer between the rubber and the body. if you didn't seal the clips when you install the molding it spreads the clips and water will channel under the clips and you will have leaks that can not be sealed without taking the gl*** out again and clean up a huge mess seal the clips. (I charge 120-150 bucks to redo a amature job that was done sometimes by young professionals) 4. after the gl*** is in and sealed take a felt marker and mark the the clip locations on the gl***.when you install the molding you only have to pound where the clips are hope this helps you and others "the old car gl*** guy" since 1965
great info! Used original clips are the best...that's another part you need to grab off of parts cars whenever you can
