I'm a little fuzzy on the particulars, and I'm sure Google can advise on this, but the story of the "Baby Hemi" was that Chrysler originaly designed it to be an engine for Indy cars. It was designed as a high revving short stroke engine. When the Indy formula changed, Chrysler had a sweet little engine on its hands and stuck it in the dowdy Dodge. It was the D-500 convertable version that was the Indy pace car in '54. If Dodge, or Chrysler for that matter, had a cool sporty body car to put it in, it would have changed mid '50's car history from the Chevy era to the Dodge era! IMHO!
