My son and I have just about finished our tinkering on this club sedan, which was restored about 14 years ago. The original engine was replaced with a 292 Interceptor. We had the carb replaced with a rebuilt Motorcraft 2 barrel. It is still a 6 volt. My 15 year old wants to keep it as "1955" as possible (go figure, but I think "Back to the Future" has something to do with it). The car runs fine but upon quick acceleration it seems to run out of pep and then dies. On top of that, when I pump the accelerator even with the electric fuel pump on, no gas is squirted into the carb. I can even stick my fingers in there with no gas on them. Keep it up and eventually gas does show up and we can start the car and head home. I am no mechanic. I figured the accelerator pump or maybe a vacuum problem. The engine has not been gone over by a professional in many years. Any ideas about what might be wrong before I start letting a garage experiment with my wallet? Thanks for any and all thoughts.

Sounds a little like the accelerator pump.

Especially with the*****tacular stuff that passes for gasoline these days carburetors need rebuilding more often than in the old days. Classic cars don't usually get driven very regular contributing to the problem. Find a genuine rebuild kit for the carb and a couple cans of carb cleaner. A source of shop air too. Clean everything thoroughly and get the carb and engine setup with a vacuum gauge. This works really well.

have a look at the fuel filter as to how clean it is. If it is partially plugged, enough fuel can't get through when you floor the gas pedal.

Thank you, Boyd Wylie. I have been checking just such things and can't find a fuel obstruction yet. Thank you!
