What ever you do don't use a 700r4 tranny behind that Hemi. I did a hemi swap into a 49 F1 ford truck and used a 700R4 because that was what came with the engine. It was a pig and I mean a pig. The ratio spread from 1st to 2nd is like going from 1st to 4th on a 4 speed, well maybe not quite that bad but bad anyway. I switched that 700R4 out for a 4 speed and really woke that little Hemi up. Take these guys advice and if you are going to go Automatic go with the 727, you will be glad you didn't use one of those miserable 700R4's.
...yeah...you still have me worried... There is very little chance that a well used bone stock cam is in good enough condition to be re-used in a rebuild. Obviously, the same goes for the lifters. Your money and your time to use as you see fit. .
73RR Well from the looks of it and based off his reputation (blackmountainhemi) I beleive it was a through rebuild as he does with all his motors. I think I miscommunicated cam was redone to stock. No old parts used everything was rebuilt. Just that this wasn't built to he a racer just a daily driver. By the way where would the engine code be I found the number of the block but I see small DD and Cid.
I am running a 291 DeSoto Hemi in my 34 Plymouth with 4 97's and it runs great. Plenty of power for a small cu. in. motor and gets 16 to 17 MPG on the road. I used a A518 trans from a late 80's truck which gives me a lower 1st gear and a .68 overdrive with 3.50 rear gears. With 29" rear tires I cruise at 2000 RPM's at 75 MPH and 2200 RPM's at 85 MPH. I used a progressive linkage running the 2 center carbs all the time and bringing the 2 outer carbs in about 1/2 throttle. She runs strong with no bog or hesitation. 3 97's would work great and look awesome on your Hemi. Do it!!
Hmm cannot seem to find the serial on this thing. I guess next best thing is to take valve covers offer to check the heads?
1739429 casting number is a 57 Dodge 325 cu in. block. The 17 57 I believe refers to a production date of the 17th week of 1957, not sure on that but the casting # is correct.
I would use a 46rh overdrive 1990-1995 dodge. Which is a 518 overdrive. Very simple modification to install a stall converter of your choice. You have to have the input shaft changed to a non lock-up converter type then your set. The adaptor for the 727 will work for the 518. You get the best of both worlds around town and on the highway. With the 727 you will be turning high RPMs on the highway unless you go with different gears in the rear which will hurt the performance around town.
An 8.8" Explorer differential with 3.73:1; 31 spline, traction lock and disc brakes would be the go. They are cheap and easy to locate and get parts for, plus you need lower gearing with an OD transmission otherwise it will bog down in OD with something like 3.00:1. Taller tyres could turn the ratio down to 3.5:1. With OD you will good economy and drive ability. I ran a 600cfm on my old 390FE and it was OK. My 2c worth
I had a Crown Vic Police Interceptor with 351W, AOD & 3:08 Posi, Seemed to be fine for the Cops & myself.
...maybe... recall that heads do interchange... You can drop a long drill rod through the spark plug hole and at least narrow down the possibilities when you have the stroke. .
