A friend of mine just bought an old(WWII surplus probably) Logan lathe. The (origional)3 jaw chuck that came with it is well worn, and a few of the jaw keyways are chipped so it wont hold anything centered. Can the chuck be rebuilt? if so, would it just be cheaper to get a new one? if thats the case, wheres the best/cheapest place to get a 1 1/2"-8, 4" to 6" 3 jaw chuck? Doesnt have to be top quality, as anything we do doesnt need to be that percise. Thanks

Logan still supplies parts and info on old lathes. Operator's manuals and parts lists are available as well. The company is committed to keeping the old machines going.

    Click on Browse

Click on the tab section 8.

At the top of the page is a pull down window that will say:
    Mfg's number
    MSC number
    Compe***ion part number
    MSC page Number

Top box put the page in
second box click on MSC page number and it will pull up the chuck section.

    Book pages 1516-1518

    Go for the Bison brand.

    Good selection.

Inexpensive and 99% sure in stock.

You will need to know the spindle mounting plate style...ie D-1 or L-2 or some numbers like that or just a plain back ?????

    Good Luck

I have a Logan lathe too and I buy most of my parts and tools from Enco. Thye have the best prices.

  10. CornCobCoupe's recommendation of Bison chucks is a good one.

    I own several.

    I'd suggest you buy a 4-jaw first.
Less convenient due to you have to dial the workpiece in, but after you've done it a few times it becomes quick and easy.

Probably your best price as well.

Buy one without a backing plate and make your own.
Threading is easily learned and easily done if you have a quick change.
If the lathe came with the full ***ortment of manual change gears you'll have to do some figuring.

You can buy Bison 3 jaw chucks with a 1 1/2 x 8 backing plate.

If the lathe is a 12" swing - measures center of headstock to the ways - get a 6" three jaw and 8" four jaw.

If it's a 10" swing, the 6" and 8" are still good ones, but if you like you can go 1" smaller on each.

4" chucks are for 6" swing chucks although they can be used on the bigger ones.

In fact, I have a Bison 3" three jaw on my big lathe - looks funny with the 1 1/2 x 8 threads, but it's probably the handiest chuck I own for small or offbeat jobs.

Thanks for the info. I think we're going to look into having the one he's got rebuilt, or wait for a smokin E-bay deal. He's already got a 4 jaw, guess we'll have to get used to using it for awhile. Only problem is we often need to chuck up 6 sided material:(

You can do hex stock in a 4 jaw,if you really have to.

The big disadvantage is 4 jaws are typically independant.
Which will slow you down compared to a 3 jaw.
