hi Hambers I had a stupid idea lately but never put my hands on an early flathead, so: is it possible to take a 37 flathead with block mounted pumps and put 36 heads with the inhead pumps to it? both 21 stud, right? is there a collision? would this make sense on such a motor when blown? curious about your replies.. It's only worth looking into if you know for sure that you have a problem that this will definitely cure.
I did have a problem. Well, instead of doubling the water pumps, I did away with all of them on a V8-60 I ran in a midget race car. I let it thermo syphon and "evaporative cool" using the physics principle of latent heat of vaporization to soak up the BTU's. The radiator bottom had six outlets with three 3/4" heater hoses to entry points along each side of the block, one of which was already there on the '60, two of which needed to be drilled and carefully tapped in the thin wall of the block. The heads were Offenhauser with the three outlets on each head and the two water manifolds that let the heated or even boiling coolant flow into an enlarged top tank which condensed any steam. The radiator cap had the stem sawed off so it only closed the top and held no pressure. Just like the old evaporative cooled engines, there is some water loss, but it could never overheat, blow a hose or scald me.
Sounds like possible cavitation problems. Also, moving water/coolant through the radiator too quickly prohibits the proper transfer of engine generated heat out of the water/coolant. This lack of proper cooling will cause over heating issues.
I have seen it done before but don't remember hearing the results. I would think that one problem would be that you wouldn't have very much wrap of the fan belts. There is a picture of one on this thread: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161605&highlight=4+water+pumps Charlie Stephens
@charlie thanks for the link - interesting read, but doesn´t seem to have any influence on the water..
i think it was bill sinclair who said in "thunder road flathead," that two water pumps are "double trouble." barney navarro advocated running copper tubing through the block that would shoot coolant up between the cylinders.
