Beaner: No genuine Covico steering wheel has their name on it. I have an original ad for that 2 spoke version by them. I collect the little buggers (18 last count) but have never given more than 35 bucks for one. I've only seen 3 or 4 two spokes in over the last 45 years, and never have ended up with one.
The sun came out for a bit so i went for the first real drive! It did really good! I will upload some video as soon as i can remember my youtube password... I will get some detailed shots soon for you guys. I am working on getting some old pictures and some from when it was pulled out of the basement... Im trying not to bother the people but man I want to see those pictures! Also the steering wheel, yeah it rules.. But i put it on there. There was a grant style adapter but no steering wheel when I got it. I figure it had a big old ford wheel in there when built and that got swapped out for a smaller aftermarket one in the 60s. As far as leaving it vs putting fresh primer on it..... I have a background in vintage guitars and antiques and for the most part the original finish is always the best, sure it could be cleaner but this is the only time it will ever be original. My plan is to keep cleaning it and making it as good as it can be in the stage its in. Its so cool!
This thing is gonna steal the show next weekend!! Couldn't be any happier for you buddy! The caps and wheel covers have been on some mighty fine rides over the years
Very happy to hear that you're going to leave the paint as is. In that condition just clean and appreciate. By the way, you make me sick with all of your finds, you lucky dog!
unreal.....I am denouncing this as an april fools joke clearly this car was assembled by a rich guy who wrote a pipe dream story to fill our minds with jealous envy......if you believe this I can sell you directions to a sealed vault that was Al Capone's....... in all seriousness I can absolutely guarantee that the builder of this car fully intended to paint it one day, back then who would show up in primer? maybe a high school kid in a stock beater with the fenders pulled off.....the question is what color? maybe you can track that down through friends and family? I see pearlescent maroon with a 'coon tail on the antenna
Actually I found a reg slip in it that said color grey primer, soon to be red. Its awesome. nothing like a red roadster....
Cool find. All the paint in Wisconsin will never make that roadster as cool as it is right now. There's history to be preserved there. Embrace & enjoy it, & drive the wheels off it.
Saw this car when it wasn't running and got a much closer look at it today. You wouldn't know it want like 1954 when looking at it. Very cool and very complete. Great car.
Thats a very cool little roadster, with an intriguing story to match. Guess we'll have to stop looking in barns, and start looking in basements. Congrats......
Im not painting it. Im preserving it. But i found a piece of paper inside stating that the owner intended on painting it Red. If it was ever to be redone or restored, it would have to be red! I need a raccoon tail. It just seems this little car needs a raccoon tail... A super old beat up one........Maybe Ill just cut my hair into a mullet for the time being....just like the 50s bro! Been driving it a little more one water pump let loose so Im swapping them both out this morning snd heading to Texas!
..... maybe an Aztec Red 1953 Caddillac was in his attic/brain ...... (?) I love all your stuff. Be safe in your travels. Enjoy !
Great find and forum. I hear that you also found Connie Winklers 60 Buick. You should be buying lottery tickets. Will you be posting anything on the Buick. Would love to see one.
