I'm a bit of a BBQ guy and that area is full of quality establishments.

If you're around downtown and cruising Congress, there are a few joints.
    Franklin Barbecue
    John Mueller Meat Co.
    La Barbecue
    Lamberts Downtown Barbecue

Just a short drive from the show, in Lockhart, you have:
    Black's
Kreuz (I think that's how you spell it)
    Smitty's Market

I haven't been to Smitty's yet, just I recently read about it.

I would like to add Donn's for BBQ. Turn left when you exit the fairgrounds unto Decker Ln. When you reach Webberville Rd. (also called FM939 or continuation of M.L.K. Blvd), turn left and get in right lane. In about half mile or so(maybe a bit further), turn into parking lot. Donn's is also open for breakfast Not cheap, but super chow.

Mother's Café on Duval. Just north of U.T. I liked it and I'm not vegetarian.

In general Austin is very vegetarian friendly with lots of restaurants offering veg sections on their menus. There was even a vegetarian "trailer" in the food court area at the Roundup the last couple of years.

If you're willing to drive a little bit, there's some good places in the towns around Austin:

    The Texan Café in Hutto
    Maxine's and PawPaws in Bastrop
Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood (can get crowded, go at off-peak times)
Kruez and Smitty's BBQ in Lockhart (expect a line, don't expect utensils, get yer fingers greasy. Couple of hot links, some brisket, try a pork chop, a slab of cheese, and wash it down with a Big Red.)

    In Austin, try:

Cypress Grill in south Austin (chocolate bourbon pie, oh yeah)
Catfish Parlor (on Ben White out towards the airport)
    Hut's downtown
Verona Ristorante Italino in Oak Hill (tucked away in the corner of the shopping center at the "Y")
Chuys (get the creamy jalapeno dip)

Will be my first time to Austin. I've seen plenty of places so far that offer BBQ'd pig & cow, how about some BBQ'd chicken? Anywhere besides Stubbs?

BBQ is another religion here so opinions vary but there are several places worth the wait and expense and STUBBS isn't one of them. Best chicken in these parts in my opinion is 'City Meat Market' in Giddings which is about an hour East of ATX.
Another place downtown called "Lamberts" has solid bird served with a 'white sauce' which is uncommon for Texas BBQ but is really great. Its a bit fancy and its a nice sit down spot not a grab and go.

Attached are some sources for info so you can make the best choice:

Thanks, had a feeling Stubb's wouldn't be worth it, that's why I said "besides". :)

Sounds like BBQ'd bird isn't that popular in Austin.

Its not, a lot of work goes into bird and the yield isn't nearly the same as brisket.

Never trust a skinny Texan to point you in the direction of good food...with out wading to deep into this one, if you are looking for food in Austin, especially BBQ, this mans top 10 list is the way to go (he also has other useful details), if the pictures alone don't make you salivate:

    http://www.fedmanwalking.com/content/austin-bbq-top-10

I can personally vouch that Valentinas is the best Texas/Mexican I have ever had.

La Barbecue is a freaking sublimely tasty and amazing, but unless you get there at 1000 for 1100 opener...forget it, but they have free lone star on the keg to help the wait. John Muellers is well worth a stop, again, a mild wait. If you give up on trying to get into Franklins (0600 arrival for lunch?!), drive 2 blocks up Micklethwaits Craft Meat, smoked Thai Sausage for the win.

Don't know if anyone here is into traditional Cocktails, but if you can get into "The Midnight Cowboy", http://midnightcowboymodeling.com/ you will be rewarded with the best traditional craft cocktails in a 1930's speak easy setting that you can handle...handle is the operative word, since you have to book your booth for 2 hours, and there is a minimum drink count. Best I have done is 6 in a 2 hour sitting, happily, only had to make to the restaurant next door.

Midnight cowboy didn't have any drinks when I was there. It did have a peculiar odor though.

For yalls information there is two hop doddies in Austin in case you don't want to wait an hour at the s. Congress location. It's a bit north of the city. Well worth it.

I thought I'd add a few places (with addresses!) and thoughts since I live close to Top Notch Burgers on Burnet. There are a ton of great places to eat in Austin, it has really become a foodie town. If in doubt, just go to some place that you've never heard of before and try it out.

    North Austin/Near Top Notch
Lots of places near Top Notch and the Burnet and Anderson intersection:

Hop Doddy - Gourmet burgers, small but tasty. Great drinks too. There will be a line.
    2438 W Anderson Ln, Austin, TX 78757

Cover 3 - One of the best sports bars in America. Not really a sports bar IMO, just great food in a nice atmosphere
    2700 W. Anderson Ln. Ste #202 Austin, TX 78757

Rebel Pizza - Nice outside upper deck.
7858 Shoal Creek Blvd, Austin, TX 78757

NXNW - Great food and they brew their own very tasty beer.
10010 N Capital of Texas Hwy, Austin, TX 78759

P Terry's Burgers - Drive through only cheap old-school real meat burgers
8515 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX 78757

Hanabi Sushi - Small hole in the wall place with some of the best traditional sushi I've ever had.
    2525 W Anderson Ln, Austin, TX 78757

Lucy's Fried Chicken - Great recipe for fried chicken, southern comfort food sides, good stuff.
5408 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX 78756

OK, all for now. I'll come up with some places other that the Burnet Road area a bit later.

Also, if you want some good barbecue, but don't want to wait in line for hours, try Freedmen's in west campus. 95% of out of towners wouldn't be able to taste the difference between this and Franklin's. Plus it's in a cool 150 year old building:

    Freedmen's
2402 San Gabriel St, Austin, TX 78705
