Hey guys, Looking for someone who knows early flathead stuff REAL well. I've got an 8BA all dressed with earlier pre 49 stuff on it.....heads,intake,cam cover, crab distibutor, etc. Everything i have has the wide pulley's. My water pumps are 49 Ford or later truck (so i'm told) . I just bought an 8BA double wide crank pulley, installed it, and tightened it down. At first i thought home run but as i got it tightened up it went about 1/2 inch past the water pump pulley's , so obviously it wont line up. I bought the crank pulley from a flathead guy in Oregon who has delt with flathead Ford stuff for 30 years so i know i've bought the right part. Someone suggested there is a spacer or an oil slinger that should be on the shaft? I dont know if its on there. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
There should be a wear sleeve that slides on the crank and forms the surface for the front seal. Maybe the one you have has been cut off at some time. Shouldn't be a problem to make a little piece to space the pulley out that 1/2" you need.
Yup - two kind of pulleys here. One will have the slinger bit built in, and the other will leave it a seperate piece. Ask Bruce Lancaster about trying to install one with it built in on a crank with a seperate one already in place! BTW - I say "slinger" but it's really a sort of sleeve with a very shallow groove cut into it - screw like - so the oil won't leak past the rope seal.
Yeah--obviously pulley is coming out, so look at its inner end: Yours is doubtless an early, roughly 1949, and won't have a final section there machined smooth with spiral groove...so you need the little separate section WITH those features. If you are careful, I think you can slice what you need from the narrow pulley you probably just removed--there's a nice clear demarcation line to guide your hatchet.
Axle i got this French one from Vern Tardel it has what you need, all he does is machine off the inner pulley section in a lathe & you're good to go. I have no use for it so if you want give me a shout & i'll throw it in the mail its yours. Kev.

I think I got dating backward--I believe early pulleys coinciding about with 1949 model year had attached seal surface, '50-3 had the loose piece.
Thanks guys! I appreciate all of your help. This **** gets frustrating at times! Kev, You are my new hero ! Alex
Believe you're right. My Merc had a seperate sleeve and I'm nearly positive it is very late production - no valve seat inserts intake or exhaust. FWIW I did chop the sleeve from my replacemant with a hacksaw. It was pretty obvious where to make the cut.
Axle here's those pics for ya! <embed width="430" height="389" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" src="http://smg.photobucket.com/remix/player.swf?videoURL=http://vidmg.photobucket.com/albums/v492/LIMEYKEV/8c372279.pbr&hostname=streammg.photobucket.com"></embed>
You've got too much time on your hand, Kev! Agree with all above, axle - pull the pulley & you should be able to peek in and see it if you do...
I do see a seal in there but i don't see an "oil slinger" . I hope what my good buddy Kev is sending me does the trick. Axle
