Sounds like 41 Merc, with you mentioning the freeze plugs near the pan. Can't explain the intake surface.
THANKS DUECE FOR THE PICTURE ,SAME AS I LOOKED AT BUT MINE HAS A ROUND CENTER HOLE THAT IS WHAT MADE ME THINK MERCURY?? IWILL CLEAN SOME MORE **** OFF TO GET A BETTER LOOK AT THE INTAKE .
I noticed it has reliefs in the block like the French flatheads. Here is some info on the block relief subject...http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/flathead-engine-with-factory-relief.410521/
HI DUECE, YES YHAT IS A 2 BOLT DIST , IS IT A GOOD CHOICE IF IT CHECKS OUT TO BE CRACK FREE AN A CAN MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF IT OR KEEP LOOKING ALSO FOUND A 69-A HAVE ONE NOW BUT ONY ONE MAIN CAP NO CRANK BUT YOU CAN USE 8BA CRANK &RODS LIKE THE FACTORY DID ?
Someone may have suggested this previously, but oven cleaner from the dollar store will do a pretty good job degreasing your engine if you don't mind the odor?
The freeze plugs were used up to 40, or maybe 41. Not post war. Those are factory reliefs in the chambers. It has the "pencil test" front block surface, so it's definitely an early block.
Looks like a 39 or 40 Mercury. What does the bore measure? Looks like the rebuild tag says .060 overbore. It would have had a 3 bolt distributor from the factory, but it was probably changed when it was rebuilt. Good block if it checks out.
