Hot Rods flathead help update

    hi guys!just an update on some more on my flathead to find what year it may be for sure? removed the intake today an found no raised area there , also removed the heads an checked on the water p***age holes an found that the top hole was trangle, the centre hole was round , and the bottom one was a t****zoidal could it be a mercury with that round centre hole?? also removed the oil pan to find 2 frost plugs on the pan rail.so far that is all I had time for, hope someone can help with the year of it , hope to clean it up an gather some more info an some pictures in the near further an try to find the #on the block & the rods if that may help in the search to see if is to be build or ??????? thanks again for your wisdom &help .

    Sounds like 41 Merc, with you mentioning the freeze plugs near the pan. Can't explain the intake surface.

    THANKS DUECE FOR THE PICTURE ,SAME AS I LOOKED AT BUT MINE HAS A ROUND CENTER HOLE THAT IS WHAT MADE ME THINK MERCURY?? IWILL CLEAN SOME MORE **** OFF TO GET A BETTER LOOK AT THE INTAKE .

    That looks like the same year I'm working on. I was told a 39. Is that a 2 bolt distributor?

    HI DUECE, YES YHAT IS A 2 BOLT DIST , IS IT A GOOD CHOICE IF IT CHECKS OUT TO BE CRACK FREE AN A CAN MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF IT OR KEEP LOOKING ALSO FOUND A 69-A HAVE ONE NOW BUT ONY ONE MAIN CAP NO CRANK BUT YOU CAN USE 8BA CRANK &RODS LIKE THE FACTORY DID ?

    Someone may have suggested this previously, but oven cleaner from the dollar store will do a pretty good job degreasing your engine if you don't mind the odor?

    If you going to use oven cleaner, use the Easy off brand. It works the best.

    The freeze plugs were used up to 40, or maybe 41. Not post war. Those are factory reliefs in the chambers. It has the "pencil test" front block surface, so it's definitely an early block.

    Looks like a 39 or 40 Mercury. What does the bore measure? Looks like the rebuild tag says .060 overbore. It would have had a 3 bolt distributor from the factory, but it was probably changed when it was rebuilt. Good block if it checks out.
