What kind of mileage are y'all gettin'?

  1. Your comment tells the tale, your ignorance(lack of knowledge on the subject). When somebody knows more about a particular subject than you do, how does that make them a liar?

Almost always, with two alike motors, the one that’s getting the better gas mileage is putting out the most power. ...........Efficiency, eh?

My '60 Plymouth Fury achieved 24 mpg on one trip, with a bone stock 318/1 barrel and a push****on Torqflite. I was going 55 mph the whole way and didn't have to make a single stop, so that probably helped a bunch. I knew the mileage (computer maps again) and I filled up when I left my starting point and when I got there. I thought that was pretty damned good. Normal driving, I figure I was getting 18-20 and I hope to get that with my new summer driver '55 Dodge.

I too am interested to hear how people are getting certain gas mileages. I've never been that interested in super speed, and really daily driving an old car will interest anyone in efficiency tricks.

maybe a 2bbl? they didn't use one bbls on V8s, although from the top the old carbs sure looked small enough to be a 1bbl.

Getting an accurate measure of fuel mileage takes some work, for example you have to make sure the odometer is calibrated, and that you don't rely too much on computer maps, which are notorious for having no clue of which streets are really there on the ground.

Also one tankful does not give a very good indication, because of filling inconsistencies, temp differences, etc. Keeping track of all the gas you use, over thousands of miles, can give you a pretty good indication of actual mileage. And if you "count the hits and ignore the misses" by only telling us about your mileage on "good" tankfuls, then you're not really helping much...

  4. right off the cuff, I Just aske-dd my 17 year old granddaughter if I filled my 10 gallon tank and drove 200 miles, filled it up again and it took 9 gallon, what was the mpg? She said, "Oh grandpa, can I go with you? So, I guess the 'I don't give-a-****s' win. ;)

    Good answer!

My 54 Dodge pickup got 13.9 on the round trip to, during, and back home from the HAMB drags. That was including the 4 timed runs and the one untimed run :D down the quarter (blistering upper 18 sec times), to and from Mokan, the Thursday night beer run, the Rt 66 cruise, the trip to the swap meet, and the trip to and from, everything from when I left home until I got back. I was going faster on the interstate then I was on the strip.

The Dodge had a worn out 360 (160,000 miles) with a 2bbl carb, a 727 auto, 3:23 gears, 215 R 75 15 tires, and all the junk under the soft bed cover. The truck probably weighed around 4,000 lbs.

Kind of courious what the new ride will get.

Actually Mapquest is pretty close on this one. I used to work a few miles from where I went to the meeting and that was 59 miles one way.

It's not that I really care about the mileage that much, it was just a shock to me that it did so well, especially after running around in the Olds gettin about 5 mpg. I just thought I would share my experience. Better mileage to me makes for more fun cruizin. BTW, my gauge doesn't work either. Still gotta figure out how to convert them all to 12 volt.

I get 9 mpg with my g***er from orange county to vegas, 3.0 gears in the rear (cause its not "safe" on the strip yet) and 600 hp on the dyno. a fresh motor helps.

In 50 years (at least) engines haven't really moved much. My wife's daily is a 2001 Nissan Xterra and on the highway it get about 14mpg. WTF? It has overdrive and a computer to make it more efficient right? NOT! When I towed with it I got 7mpg. Next truck I'll be getting will have an SBC in it that gets 22mpg highway and 22mpg towing.
