Guys, I've been out of rodding for many years. Wanted to find a nice steel model A to play with. I've been reading your forum for a couple of weeks and I understand that gl*** cars are not preferred here. I've read here that there is a company that puts out poor quality bodies and piss poor customer service. I want to avoid that at all costs. From a few pictures could you tell me if a 32 three window coupe is a "street beast"? In case you can I'll add some pictures. Thank you in advance Robert
Nice car for a "good guys" show, but as mentioned, Not Traditional.. Welcome, You'll figure it out.. An yes go w/steel..That's a Good start..
Street Beasts, to the best of my knowlege, never made a 32. They have made 34's as coupes, roadsters and Vickys. They also make a Willys coupe. All of their "rods" are full fendered and the fenders are part of the bodies. I consider them kit cars, not hot rods.
It's your car and your money. Gl*** bodies are a good alternative to build a street rod but they will never be considered traditional or cl***ic. They will be a fun driver that you can enjoy without constantly worring about some idiot wrecking it.
Thanks for the replies Sorry if I've posted in the wrong forum. Good information. I'm 6'2" around 270. I say in a all steel 31 Tudor sedan today. ... chopped 3" ,my head was in the wood. Sad too because the car is salvageable. ie. Never finished
since the '31 sedan did not fit you maybe it would fit someone else here - have pics & info to share? have you thought of looking at later rides like from the 40's that have a more room in them?
I also don't think Street Beasts ever made a 32. As for whether a gl*** car can look "Correct"or not, I present this one.
Had you rather have fun and enjoy driving a gl*** car or spend a lot of time and more money trying to find a steel one? I prefer original steel also but you can build a gl*** car that is hard to tell from steel if you pay attention to the details. And keep people from knocking on it to see if its steel. I have seen some nice gl*** ones but personal choice would keep me from owning one.
Right you are, I'll post a link here of that's cool. If not I'll kindly remove it https://neworleans.craigslist.org/cto/5522254088.html I have looked into the later 30's and a few 40's. The coupe in hotroddon's picture is what I want...... we all know how that goes
I agree wholeheartedly. Steel is real. That being said I want to be able to drive this one and not weep if it gets scratched. I'm thinking and I could be wrong here. That I could build or buy a nice gl*** car with a great ch***is/motivation and fit a steel body in the future, as it presents it self
The car you pictured is fairly respectful. If your set on building a '32, search the threads on '32 Ford's or coupes. Settle in on want you want. Your budget and abilities will greatly direct which way you go, steel gl*** or whatever. WELCOME to the Hamb and study us real good. Good luck!! Tim
Believe me, there are a lot of gl*** cars at most any traditional meet. Dressed properly, many folks can't tell the difference. A traditional engine, the right wheels and tires, and many other details make all the difference. You should look at a repo steel body too, if gl*** doesn't float your boat.
If you have a unlimited budget hold out for a steel deuce,I prefer a steel car but I have owned several gl*** cars ,you don't have to make anyone happy but yourself. The photo you showed is not a street beast. HRP
Well I don't like the color of it. Now out of curiosity (and not to stir the pot) what are those wheels? if it is going to cause drama PM me. Like I said it is my curiosity that is getting the best of me.
Like every above says, it's often a question of finances. BUT ..., if you are on the fence, you might consider building or buying a "traditional" car (ch***is, suspension, power train, etc.) with a fibregl*** body. That'll get you in the game to enjoy your ride RIGHT NOW! As finances improve and/or luck allows (finding a steel body) you can prepare the real steel to replace the gl*** body when it's ready. Then recoup some of your investment when you peddle the gl*** to a street rodder. Just saying.
I don't get all the trad vs non trad vs kustom vs hotrod b/s sometimes. If fibergl*** isn't traditional because it's not original steel, no matter if it's on an original frame, with a v8-60, original halibrand quick change, on wooden wheels, then pretty soon NO modern built hotrod will be able to be traditional due to lacquer paint becoming illegal across the country. Also, what about body filler? Is a car non-traditional if it's an all steel body that you used body filler on, rather than lead? I mean seriously guys, this guy just wanted some input, not to start a trad vs non trad debate.
It's all good my friend. The last old car I had was my 55 chevy 150 that my pops and I built in the 80's. Because I was young and stupid I sold it. I miss it. I'll never get "that" 55 back. Time to move on and learn. Not just from my mistakes but from yours also. I'm thick skinned, it's all good! I have some patience....... what you described is what I was thinking.
Yes steel is real. I think I know more guy's with traditional style gl*** cars than steel. NH. winters were rough on that old steel.
If you go with 'gl***, understand that it will always be looked down on, even by guys who don't (and can't afford to)own one. It will (most likely) never be worth as much as a comparable steel car, no matter how nice. Kind of like a 4 door vs. a two door. It is going to be lower on the food chain and criticized by all the '***ual intellectuals' at the car shows, just for being fibergl***, no matter how nice it is, right or wrong. If you go with 'gl***, don't pay the going rate for a steel car, and be aware that when you sell, it will be worth less and eliminate some buyers from the git-go. On the other hand, you may attract some guys who can't afford or don't care about a steel car. It's a trade-off. It's also about having fun. Go have fun.
To newbies, it's the look that attracts them. To many of the guys who have been around the HAMB since the early days, it seems that anything other than original Henry metal with some ancient engine/trans/rearend combo is discounted as a street rod and frowned upon. Plenty of guys build cars with Brookville steel bodies and get lots of rallying cries but plastic is not fantastic. At the end of the day, it's just an old car hobby. Build what you want (or buy it if that suits better), but just have as much fun as you can. If someone wants to demean you because your car doesn't fit their vision of what your car should be - move on to the next person. Welcome to the HAMB and just enjoy yourself.
If you're building a car to sell, call gas monkey garage. If you're building a car for yourself, build exactly what you want and let all the cronies label is as a blueberry cupcake for all anyone cares. As long as you like what you build and drive the sh*t out of it while everyone else is whining about how untraditional it is online.
