Experience in what way??? Lockers in general or THAT specific one?? Generally speaking YES I run one in my Rambler. They are sorta squirrely at times, but they sure do WORK. Squirrely in the sense that they make the car UNDERSTEER until the locker starts to ratchet. Can be a ***** on a slick road going around a turn - even when you're driving EASY. Some complain about the noise they make - never bothered me. That's about all I can tell you.
squirrelly? hey...how did you know I have a locker in my 55? Mine is a Detroit No-Spin, the high dollar one, and it does affect handling slightly. I think in a lighter car it would be more exciting, my big old boat seems to tame it a bit. No noise from mine, it's the improved one they came out with 10-15 yrs ago. btw, I just had mine out and apart to inspect it after 50k miles behind a blown bbc in a heavy car...no noticeable wear....good stuff! I was swapping rear gears at the time.
Very noisy. When cornering at slow speeds it will "click, clack, snap & pop". With a manual trans you have to coast around corners with the clutch in at parkinglot speed to avoid jerking/bucking. Works great off-road, but I would use a clutch tipe psi for a hotrod. Brett
Yep,I have the same one - except mine's older (noiser) never bothered me although I have had several "experts" tell me there was something wrong with my rear end making all sorts of noise - I try to tell them that it's just the chili, but they rarely get it. I suppose my Rambler is lighter than your 55 - in any case mine DOES get your attention - almost lost it a couple times - a few of those I wasn't even screwing around Who knows maybe it's those old rock hard tires I'm too lazy to change!! In any event I like them, but they're probably not for everyone.
I have the Powertrax locker in my coupe. It works very well. Yes, it makes noise and yes, it under-steers for the first couple of feet under hard acceleration.. But so what?? I say Hike your skirt up sister Its a Hot Rod. The pipes off the Hemi make a little noise too.. maybe I should have bought a Cadillac.
I would steer clear of the Lock-rite. I ran one for a year in my 4x4 and it has a lot of quirks. Eventually, the teeth wore out in it and it was a doorstop. I now run a Detroit locker and it has nowhere near as many handling quirks ***ociatted with a locker. It's been about 3 years of long hard miles and the Detroit shows no signs of quitting. The Powertrax lasted maybe 8 months. Just my personal experience.
