image.jpg Would this center plug also be a drain plug ??

  4. Fill and drain on the front two, maybe the one in the pumpkin is to check the level? Most transmissions you fill until the oil spills out the fill plug. But maybe you fill this one until it spills out of the plug in the pumpkin.

Center plug looks like a fill/check plug. Not sure about the other two

Center plug at the back is the fill/level plug. Fill till lube drips out, or check by sticking your finger in to the first knuckle. If you can touch oil it's full.

Drain plug will be a similar plug, at the lowest point on the diff.

  7. The two lowest are not low enough to get all the gear oil out, so maybe the back one is for inspection?

Those three on the front are not drains or fill plugs. See the jam nut on them? That means they are adjustable for some reason. I don't know anything about 37 Chevys. I would be afraid that they set bearing pre-loads or pinion position or something else that shouldn't be fooled with unless you know what they are for.

If it doesn't have a drain, get a suction gun to pull the oil from the fill hole. They are only about $20.

if you turn those funky screws with the lock nuts, you need to do some adjusting...

There is one plug on the back, which is the fill plug. If there is no drain plug on the very bottom of the housing, then there is no drain plug, and you remove the cover to drain it, or you use a suction device to suck the old oil out if you're too lazy to do it right.

Squirrel is exactly right - don't touch the screws with the lock nuts ! The screw have a tapered end, that exerts pressure on a collar which in turn, preloads the pinion bearings.

The correct way to drain the oil, according to the '37 Shop Manual, is to remove the cover. I usually remove the lowest cover screw and let it drain overnight, then remove the cover and clean the housing with a rag, as much as possible. Don't, however, go squirting any solvents on the pumpkin - just wipe it clean as you can.

Draining and filling is something so basic (back then) that they didn't need to put it in the manual...everyone knew how to do that!

or maybe it's in the owner's manual?

If you din't move the jam nuts in relation to the screws, you can likely just screw them back in until they touch.
If you loosened the jam nuts, just screw the bolts in until they touch and resnug the jam nuts. Probably didn't disturb anything.
If you have screwed it up beyond repair, I have a completer rear end you can have for the cost of the shipping.

Probably didn't hurt anything, as he said, just snug the bolts and tighten the jam nuts.

Usually, if you don't know what you're doing, it's a good idea to ask before you start messing with it? :)

  21. the very bottom bolt ON THE BACK COVER can be removed to drain the fluid. it is a through bolt into the reservoir. put a little sealer on the threads before putting it back in.
from the picture there is an obvious clean spot on the bolts to put them back in the position they belong.
