And the other joker in the mix...commercial carb rebuilders of the past dis***embled these things by the thousand and cheerfully mixed everything as they ***embled. I have 59's with very early tops/vents, FordLincoln ****rels, etc....when I was a kid, I could not figure out why all my carbs seemed to be vented differently.

AGREE! We used to figure that if we had 10 "matching" Ford V-8 carbs, we could probably ***emble three with everything correct!

The same is true for Chevrolet 6 cylinder carburetors.

The commercial guys figure if it fits, it is the right part!

this is a great thread, very informative. Any advice on mixing or matching the various types of vented tops? I am trying to put together two (just two!) 8BA or 7RT type 94s for a 2x2 8BA-flathead. Like @Bruce Lancaster said, I can give you themodel numbers stamped on the bodies but its a **** shoot of what I really have.
All the tops I have for the 8ba/7rt carbs are relieved for the high nozzle bar, and have BOTH the internally vented tube and the external hole behind the choke shaft.

    Bruce,

Any particular reason to stick with the 59 ?
Is it a better carb, or just more readily available ?

    Thanks, Clemens.

59...well, my first car is a '48 Ford, and as I slowly figured out why everything about my carbs was different in odd ways I begin to find out what should have been in a 59 and to dig for that stuff, original to my Ford. The are easy o get, have the best venting, and in terms of metering are essentially identical to everything from 1939 into the early fifties. They have the extended shafts to fit early Ford and/or multi carb use, don't need funny aircleaners like some later ones, and fit Early Ford fuel lines and hot rod equivalents, again unlike some late flathead ones.
So, easy to use for any purposes I might need. No metering secrets, as metering parts remained about the same from the 1939 variety through early '50's.
