Uh yes it was. When I was in high school there was an alternative lifestyle clothing store in Portland Oregon called the . . . wait for it . . . "The Gay Blade." That said Gayland was a prominent boy's name in the '40s and '50s. At least back this way so maybe he was a transplant.
There was a guy named Gayland, who had a Corvette shop (sells), across from New England Dragway, Epping, NH.
How time p***es by....I raced out of the Bellflower shop in the 70s. Yes Gayland was a s****per, I had 4-5 different hulls through my few years and while my last boat was a combination of Ken E's motor, Gayland's shop and Sleek Craft boats it was a fine ride at the time. I ran into John Ewald from the old Boat News a few years back, also Don Ewald. They operate the photo website WDIFL, I believe that's right, but it stands for we Did It For Love. Found lots of photos from those days, they have a huge library. Sadly shortly after talking to John he p***ed away. I'm uploading a photo, pictures are worth more than words. Our group in those days did include some great people.
I have the same pic from that day. During that run the motor fouled a plug and launched you out of the boat. The K-9 also flipped during the circle race with Ron ( mad dog) Bolton driving, we had the motor ready to race by the next heat.
