got a shoebox at the shop and rebuilt the whole front end etc.new kingpins and bushings.kingpins are .8100, bushings are reamed to .8110.very nice fit.the problems are the spindles.they are .8150.is this a common problem? i got another set of spindles and they measure the same.i can n move thewheel alot.with the spindle on the benchyou can move the kingpin alot.
I don't know anything about the specs on those. Nobody is helping, so at least it's back up top again. Is there any chance that the kingpin set is not for that year range? It seems odd that you have the same measurement on another pair of spindles? You'd think that if the pin was run loose in the spindle for years, the worn hole would not be perfectly round? Can you do a web search on what the 49-51 pins should be for OD size? or an old Motors Manual? '
Dont know man but that sounds awful loose. I had a 51 ford and it was not loose at all after putting in new bushing and pins...something sounds off.
Consider resizing it the same way everyone does the straight axle bosses. Heat it and beat it. I reshaped a cold chisel and did mine.
I'll be ripping into my kingpins in the next few weeks , so I'm interested in what the heck is going on . Seems very odd to me . Here's a free bump
Ask around at the Shoebox Central forum. I would think that the bushings have to be a light press fit into the spindles and possibly honed/reamed to size after. I worked in a truck front end & alignment shop years back and recall the process... I did not take notes.
49-up is not like 48 and older; the bushings are pressed into the uprights, not the spindle, and the king pin is locked solid in the spindle stub with the locking cross pin. his spindle bore is too loose for the new pin. His bushings and their bores are not the problem. .
i got the spindles from shoebox central.those guys are no help.they rebuilt the steering box as well and its as loose as i sent it to them.they said that there is nothing they can do for me.im done with them.
You could always just make up bushings with an ID that suits the kingpin.I have had to do that sort of thing WAY more times than I want to remember.Do keep in mind that "aftermarket part" is newspeak for "doesnt fit".
Here's the deal, I don't like my company getting slammed especially when we go above and beyond to help people. The steering boxes are assembled at true dead center and have no play at center. It takes quite a bit of work to get them dialed in properly and they never leave the door until they are perfect. We went thru several sets of spindles and fitted them with an NOS king pin until we found a set that was "Tight" they wouldn't have left unless they were. You called once on behalf of the owner and I explained the steering box needed to be set at dead center and the alignment needed to match and if the rest of the steering linkage was worn out you would still have play. No other calls were ever made and you were not told that we could do nothing for you. Not one time has anyone been talked to with disregard like that. Sounds like the owner of the vehicle and I need to talk.
i didnt mean to slam you.i appologize.it is just frustrating as its the cust car and cant leave till safe and finished.i called friday about the spindles and the man i talked to said the spindles were the best you had.we agreed to send them back as they measured the same as the cust car.no problems just have to figure soething else out.once again im sorry about the slam.really didnt mean to offend.just stuck in the middle of this
