I have the AOD and 302 installed in my car. The problem is that the previous owner cut the speedo cable. So I need a new one. I wanted to know what you guys used for a speedo cable? Is it a pretty universal thing or will it be specific to the speedometer? Thanks in advance for your help. Chris
They're pretty much universal. Most auto parts stores will have them in the Dorman HELP line. You cut the cable to length and crimp on the appropriate tips for your application.
I will need the sheath or conduit (the outer cover that the inner cable spins in). Will that also be universal?
I used the speedo cable that came with the AOD transmission. The female fitting on the cable didn't quite fit the male fitting on my '54 speedometer, but it was just big enough to fit over the top of it. So...I just hose clamped it on and it's been working fine for a couple thousand miles.
Here's a thread about speedo cables that might be helpful, including some PNs for cables and help selecting the speedo gear. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/speedometer-cable.915984/ I'm using an ATP '67 Mustang cable (ATP-Y807) for my '54 w/T5; length is good and it should work for C4 and AOD transmissions as well.
You need to scroll down a little but I have listed the correct part number here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/speedometer-cable.915984/ This link was listed in the "FAQ sticky"
