i need a new 40 Ford steering column for my build as i have a 40 wheel already. looking at aftermarket columns and ones for 40's are all quite expensive for some reason. generic ones like on speedway are a lot less but not sure if you can put a 40 wheel needing the keyed shaft to install unless there is an adaptor that i am not aware of. looking for some suggestions / guidance on this one. thanks

yes i have been looking at the lime works one but it's $400 which was what i thought was expensive compared to the universal ones like speedway has that are $169.

can I ask why you need a new column, rather than a used 40-48 one?

I have a 40s column in my 32 hooked to a cross steer box with a u-joint. It is not hard to do that.

X2 I prefer 40 columns as well--easy to convert to automatic if you so desire-use the 40 shaft.

doesn't have to be new, not real easy to find a used one in western canada hence why i was looking aftermarket. i am running a floor shift so just need a plain column

  8. The 37/41-ish pickups have a mast with the upper cone that matches up nice to a '40 wheel. I'm using one on a F100 box with a new steering shaft to fit a splined aftermarket small '40 steering wheel.

I use a 40 column--splined center shaft that is solid (55-57 chevy from Borgeson)-vintique wheel fits. Then use a 55-57 top bearing in addition to the stock type sleeve down the tube a bit. This allows the horn contact on the bearing and vintique wheel has a place for pop in horn contact. Take wire out behind column drop for horn--done 6-7 40's like this. Delrin machined bushing on the bottom--all done. Get one from a pickup as said above or modify a p***enger car one.

Check the HAMB cl***ifieds forum ...I see 'em sometimes. I'm using a 40 column with it's original key switch and steering lock with the original 40 keyed shaft and a 47 wheel..all fits together nicely and I like having the steering lock.

Mine also have the column drop and key setup--they pop up from time to time. I have two in my stash for the next 40's

I have some 40 column parts that might do. The shifter shaft is only about 2 foot long but the 'bell' is fine. The piece of column tube next to it has the end that was removed from the bell. The rusty 3/4 inch dia. shaft has the proper taper and key that accepts a 40 wheel. The long piece of column tube is probably mid-thirties vintage. I don't want anything for this junk...the problem is how to get it to you. I live in Washington state so not too far away.

If the OP is not interested, I may be; need a tube and bell. Shoot me a p.m. when convenient....

Here's a question on the subject, is there an adaptor for a 40 Ford steering wheel to mount to more universal columns like the hot rod column speedway sells?

I am using a 40 wheel and column. I have a U joint to get around the hemi so had to rig up a contact ring to use the horn. The ring is glued to the back of the wheel and a contact is put in the bell. The shaft is a recycled stock shaft of some year. I can't visualize what an adapter would look like. I have never seen one. You can probably find the original stuff.
