A long time ago in some hot rod magazine I saw a yellow colored device that you put across the terminals of your battery kill switch. The nice thing about this one is that it had a circuit breaker inside it that tripped if you tried to start the hot rod with the kill switch in the "off" position. After a period of time the circuit breaker would reset itself so you could continue to use the device with no maintenance after your mistake. Its was used as a memory keeper for your stereo. Anybody know what I'm talking about and where I might find a link?
Like this? Just an inline fuse holder that I run on back of a hidden kill switch, don't use the battery terminal style knob. It retains ECM / radio memory and allows radio to work when shut off but will trip if you try to hot wire. Fuse is easily replaced, only you should know where switch and fuse are!
Resettable circuit breakers are a common item on aircraft and come in a variety of amp capacities, from as little as 1 Amp and upward. IIRC, in the past I have bought automatic reset circuit breakers from an auto supply source. A little checking around on the internet should provide a suitable breaker and supplier. The fuse holder Mgtstumpy shows above is the least expensive and most readily available item, and will do what you want, with only the necessity of replacing the fuse if accidentally blown. Ray
Yes chargin03, thats the one! For anyone else that is interested this is the link to the manufacturers page at American Autowire....http://www.americanautowire.com/shop/memory-retainer-***embly-lifeline I really like that it resets on its own once the load has been removed.
Perfect timing, was just discussing the memory need for a '54 we are working on, when we added a battery shut off switch.

Don't everyone answer at once! Seems to me if you do this you won't have to worry about blowing fuses/breakers.
Gotta run another hotwire to the device. And, depending on whatever else is also connected to the original device feed thru a switch, you may blow a fuse anyway if you forget and switch the other stuff on. Jack E/NJ
Well, I did attempt to answer this morning, immediately after you posted the question. Somehow got the post messed up and just deleted it as I was already late. I think it is possible, if you ran an unfused jumper as you propose, that activating the starter could pull current through that wire because it might flow back through the ignition switch from whatever it was powering. That would be an unpleasant thing! Not knowing the specific wiring harness and the internal circuitry of the devices being kept alive, I can't say with any certainty that smoke would be emitted. I am just posing the possibility. Both methods are essentially the same though, it seems to me. But I would absolutely put a fuse or breaker in that line on my own vehicle. Ray
On my setup I have a small wire hooked to the battery side of the cutout switch, fused at 30amps this wire feeds my radio memory and my remote entry system. If I try to start it with the battery switch off nothing happens, nothing burns, works fine.
