Anybody have any pics of Old Noisy naked? I've searched a bunch and haven't found anything, found a couple of construction photos but they were working with the body on. I'd sure like to get a look at the frame rails and ch***is layout. I'm lookin for the early one with the rollbar, not the new, long one with the cage. Thanks in advance.
I'm quite sure the original car was featured in HRM back in the day. Can you give me an approximate time frame? I've got all the old HR mags but don't want to spend ALL day searching. Get me in the ballpark and if I find it I'll email you a scan.
hot rod did a build up on a rear engine t ....called test tube t best i remember.....holly hendrick (sp) was the owner ....i think frank hauzer (sp) built the ch***is....around 61 or so......brandon
Drag Racer Magazine in their January 2000 issue did an article with pictures on the Speed Sport roadster. I have that issue and looked at the pictures; but none showed the ch***is in any detail. The only two pictures showing any detail on the car still had the body on. A little history may help in the search for ch***is pictures. In the middle sixties after Red and Lyle built their rail, they took the roadster body off and put on a fibergl*** Corvair body to run it as a "funny" car. If you do a Google image search you might come up with some pictures of the Corvair-bodied car with the body up. It seems to me the Corvair/roadster car was wrecked at some time or other. That's why when they got around to building the current car they had to start from scratch on the frame. I grew up in Tucson and learned to love drag racing at the old Tucson Dragway watching Speed Sport and people like Don Garlits and others including locals like Earl Wells running his Chevy-powered 29 roadster (g***er).
This probably wont help at all,but here it is anyway. I'm towing this jewel from the NHRA Motorsports Museum to the March Meet in a couple weeks. http://cacklefest.com/SpeedSport.shtml
What would help is if you could get some pictures of the ch***is. I don't need this information today, it's for a future project I've had in mind for a few years. Just want to get some solid plans together. I have some detailed ch***is shots of several other cars in that configuration, just trying to complete my research. I'd like to see it in person, just not possible right now.
Tom Prufer did a recreation of the Speed Sport in the early 80's. I saw it at his house and at the Fremont Nostalgia drags. But it was sorta old news since I'd seen the original run a few times back in the day, as they say. Sadly, didn't get any pictures of either. Charlie
Bill: I guess I spoke too soon-I've just looked thru all of '56, '57, & '58 and came up empty. I know I've seen pictures of the bare ch***is somewhere but ???? I can see those bare flextubes in my mind's eye but sure can't remember the actual where and when.
I can't find any body off pics except for one of the latest versions they have been racing. They had a lot of different versions, they were up to like #7 by 1971. Here's an article on one of the first ones along with a Gratiot Auto Supply Nailhead powered version.
The speede sport team is here in Tucson. The orgninal car is in the NHRA display at pomona and the car they run is a copy. Enfo here on the hamb knows Red real well and might be able to get some pics for you. Enfo's computer is down right now so I will call him and see what he can do for you.
Ever since I saw the copy of the original in an issue of Street Rodder, I've wanted to build a street going copy of this car. I love it!! I even researched and found a good, cheap and tough 5 speed transaxle to use.
Where did you find that? Whats it out of? Also, does anyone have any hi-res pictures of any of these cars? If so, Id like to get them and hang them in the garage. Nick32vic@yahoo.com
I forwarded this thread to another Over The Hill Gang Tucson member.Wade was involved with the rebuild of the car and should have all the details ya need,or you can contact him and lonewoofs hotrod repairs in Tucson
when this car was retired it sat in lyle fishers yard..2 blocks from my house (I was about 12) we used to hook our bikes to it and pull each other up and down the street with our bikes...damn if I only knew then.....and my folks always wondered why I loved hot rods..circa 1967.........
Probably the last place you would think to look..... 1983-1988 Audi 100/200/5000/9000 "016" model FWD 5 speed transaxles. Very tough. Said to be good to around 450-500hp from the factory. Adapatable to both Chevy and Ford smallblock's with an adapter from http://www.kennedyeng.com/other.htm. There are a few different ratios available through the years. Transaxles with the prefix's of AAV, 3V, 3K have the best ratios. Here's a pic of the "016" 5 speed transaxle
This was from last year at Speedworld. Not sure about the story on this S.S. car but it was the short WB version, I believe. Plenty bad***s and you know what? Really noisy! ha So many beautiful drag cars and this is definitely one of 'em....
Hot Rod Ron, Meatball and any body else, anything you can find will be greatly appreciated. It's like the frames are from Area 51 or something.
