I haven't tried the tires since..... Believe it or not... I still have the same crappy tires on the front of my car, never changed them but it's on my list this season. I'm going with the ribbed fronts. I put a pair of the robbed tires on the front of my old 32 roadster and they were by far the "roundest" i ever purchased from Coker.

Going to throw this one back to the top. I'm contemplating 450-475 Firestone vs. the 500 Firestone Dirt Track ribbed tires for my new A roadster project. I have a set of the 500's on my running A roadster with 750's on the rear and I have no complaints at all. Just looking for some new opinions.

Also, thinking of purchasing from Performance Plus Tire and Automotive Superstore in So. California instead of buying through Coker, Jegs, or Summit. They have free shipping just like the Jegs and Summit and I kinda like supporting small business if I can. Anyone ever dealt with them?

    Thanks,
    Mike

I used Performance Plus when I lived in SoCal many times. Good service. No problems

I only wish I still could because all we seem to get in Australia are the square tyres. I had them shaved and it fixed them but now have no tread depth left. 3 sets of tyres and all problems.

From Performance Plus I bought 3 sets and not a single out of round problem. They know what they are doing, as opposed to summit or Jegs just shipping the next in the pile/ stock that might be square

To me radials run and drive better because of physics. Running BFG TA radials reversed and painted black on the RWW. Function over fashion. Maybe not traditional but a lot better and cheaper than some of the "old school tires on market". Let the flaming begin?

I put ribbed 'Stones on last summer...couldn't be happier with the quality. I had my old original rims trued up to perfection by a local spring shop. They have an old machine that will tweak the slightest wobble out of a wheel.
After painting, I mounted them myself. They run so true that I never bothered to get them balanced. Best front tire I ever had. They track straight and don't tend to wander in the pavement grooves like the flat top tires. Either I got lucky or they've fixed the problems since this old thread was started.

    Firestone Deluxe Champions
    Ribbed Fronts are 5.00 x 15"
    Rears are 7.50 x 16"
I prefer the smaller wheel up front...seems like most on here don't.

From running on El Mirage and Bonneville since 1975 and working in a tire store in the 60's I know 2 things. NO STEEL WHEEL OR BIAS PLY TIRE IS ROUND. I race on machined aluminum wheels for this reason. All wheels and tires have a manufacturing tolerances. When I'd need to use steel wheels I straighten and true them with hours of filing and hammering them on the axle they will run. Tires are made round by using a belt sander on the ground with the tire/wheel combo on its axle. When right it is marked to go on only one way.
Balencing is a complete story in itself. I may move the tire on the rim 5-6 times until I find when the least weight will be needed. Then make round and rebalance. When I see a pile of weight on a wheel I just cringe. It's all about caring and hoping the manufacture cares. Good Luck.

  12. ^^^^^^^^Jimmy6, After chasing ride disturbance problems for many years in the tire business, you've exactly right. Only dead luck will give a combination of tire AND wheel without "blueprinting " the assembly. Anything less requires a compromise to some degree.
