No, Hunter's racing career ended abruptly in 1956 when a car he was driving at 150 mph crashed and burned. This was the sidewinder car if I remember right. When he came out of a coma two weeks later, his reactions were dulled to the point that racing became a hazard.

 

I'm guessing that Dean Lowe was not competing there that day, or the story would have been different.

 

This was the car that Creighton crashed...before it he sold the roadster to Hill Alcala, as Dean Lowe also noted...Hill raced the car for years (I have a video that was sent to me showing Hill at the '59 Smoker's meet racing the Speed Sport roadster---flathead vs. Chrysler, no contest).....Hill could well have raced at Fremont in the '80s.

 

We raced the roadster at Fontana a couple of times with the Chevy-powered car below. 283 on a holed-out Model A frame. Not much money invested, but a lot of fun for a while.

Nationals Drag Races - Indianapolis. Don Garlits' Dart 2 topless match racer built from Marvin Schwartz's Garlits Chassis Special dragster. It represents the first funny car with a tubing chassis. Campaigned by Emery Cook it featured a blown 426 Hemi powerplant.

 

1966 Pomona or Irwindale?
