Hi guys, I am new here and I have a problem. I am searching for a SBC water pump that is shorter than the normal short water pump. The clearance between my low profile electric fan is too small for the traditional SBC short water pump. I need like an inch more clearance. Any ideas or thoughts?

move the radiator. this is why the mock up stage is so important. we have been through this problem as many hambers have too.

I know of no shorter pump than the oem "short" one, this kind of problem usually arises from placing the engine too far forward to gain clearance at the firewall when using larger diameter distributors such as HEI style.

My engine is so close to the firewall I cannot fit a HEI, unfortunately. Radiator cannot go any further forward. I pulled out the engine and trans in this car. I replaced the tired 305 with a nicely built 350. It originally had a flex fan on. I decided to opt for an electric and I thought I would have enough clearance. I was wrong.

  6. it sounds like there is some clearance...or does it interfere? post a picture

Spal has some very low profile fans

You may have to go back to a mechanical fan ( not a bad thing). Get a good 18" 6 blade steel fan instead of the flex fan.

    Mechanical fan.
Get a big heavy duty steel one if there's space or a thin one if there isn't.

Leave the electric fans for the guys with transverse engines...

    BTW, welcome to the HAMB.

I just took it out and put in a mechanical fan. I am not wasting any more time on that. I am anxious to get back on the road. I still have to hook up exhaust, fuel, power and cooling.

A well designed fan shroud with the fan situated half way out of the opening should be adequate ***umming timing settings are correct.
Some thermostat juggling may also be needed.

I fitted a spal fan in my 38 chevy pu.kept the fan high up in the rad so the motor didn't interfere with the pulley on the waterpump.I also tilted the rad slightly, moved the bottom of it forward a little.this involve making new brackets for the rad.rad is alloy, thicker than stock.engine is sbc

It may not be practical now, but as a side note and for the future, switching to 4.3 v-6 will get you 4.5" more inches of clearance.
