  1. Ratty: Good to hear you've put a few miles on it. I'm sure the garage it's sitting in isn't yours. Is that the exhaust testing equipment in the floor?

Brakes testing, on a "Rollin" road", going around 3mph. You the process to test if you braking capability are equal left to right, and front to back.

In Denmark they allow. 20% difference left to right on the front.
30% on the rear and the front needs to be braking more the the rear.
This test needs to be aced.

And rolling road for dynoing looks a little different, and with those mirrors and that clean floor I would say inspection shop, not work shop.

  3. Voly: We used to have exhaust testing here with the car under load. They put it on a machine similar to what's in the picture.

Hello timwhit, Volvobrynk has explain corretly the equipement of the technical control place. After the brakes on the rolls, the metal plate shake up and down the suspension......

This is an exemple found on YouTube

in France, if you dont have positive result, you can't drive your car on the road....and no modified cars can be accept.....think about Lowrange in this place!!!......i'm happy to "almost" past the test in one shot (wipers sucks ;;;---)))). )

And the technical control is not free, you must pay for that!

That looks like pretty much same kind of inspection that we have in here.We dont have any carbon monoxide tests for pre 1978 cars, but those tests can be a pain in the ass for newer vehicles. My brother works as a vehicle inspector,so i've asked some advice from him now and then.

But actualy, i'm stuck with a cooling trouble....the radiator is ok, so i think the water pump is dead.....let's see what's happen.....
Bearings ok, no leak, but water pump turbine is completly rotten.....[IMG]

A new water pump is too expensive, and the body is ok, so i must find a new axle kit. I have removed the dead one.....

Good lord, Ratatouille, that impeller is toast! It is amazing that it moved any water at all.

  10. We take so much for granted, here in the states. Most of those rat rods would be thrown out of the test centers.
And what antique American car water pump can't be had within a few days??
This car needs to go to the Mooneyes show.

Most or all countries in Europe have some kind of technical control, before registration and sometimes periodical. It varies how strict they are, like in Norway cars older than 1960 are exempt all testing after the initial control. I'm suspecting this is a way for the EU bureaucrats to "help" European car manufacturers, as they make more money on parts than on cars...

It's gotten pretty absurd, but luckily we have quite loose rules on older cars here in Norway. Sweden, Finland, UK and Denmark also allow hot rods and modified cars. The rest seem pretty strict, like France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Not sure about the younger countries in the east, but I do see some cars from the Baltic countries.

For us the car needs glass, wipers, fenders, lights and turn signals, and an overall "quality of workmanship". No booger welds, no rust, no riveted panels, no suspension parts made of wrenches and road signs, etc. So yes, no rat rods here...

You can buy a rebuild kit that includes impeller, bearings and seals.
If your pump is that way, the water tube inside the head is toast, it cools the exhaust valve seat ...
I let you imagine also the mud pile around the 4th cylinder.

  19. Congratulations on passing the technical inspection and getting approved for driving on the road. You have made so much progress, and the results are great. Keep up the good work!

I would test with water, then add coolant if everything tests okay. That way, you avoid a mess if things don't work out and you have to tear into the engine.

Too late Laroke! I have made the mistake, i was too sure about my job, but as Crisp said, rebuilding the water pump was not sufficient. The temperature still hot......bad news......

I'm looking to find a new head gasket, and inox coolant tube in the head, then remove the head, clean the bloc, change that fuckin' tube...., well, in fact, finishing the job correctly.......

    It's never finish.....:-(

  24. Hi Rata,

went to an antiques market today, saw this vintage German Fregate catalog, thought about your car and had to buy it.
Here some pics for inspiration - Those big white walls would look perfect on your car! Also the lady in the last pic would look good with your car.....
