Hey, $10 or $15 a year for access to the classifieds is O.K. by me. I'm sending in $28 this month for my annual dues to Inliners. While that does get me six issues of a bi-monthly mag, they have also put a 30 post cap on non-members. Not trying to run anybody off; they just want those who benefit from the site to help support it. It seems there were quite a few folks posting who were not Inliners members. Fordsix.com uses a simple Paypal link to take contributions, but its voluntary, not pay as you go. As for me, I'm overdue for an auction over here, coming up in a couple of weeks. Later, Kinky6
I have always said when you take the damn Posts count away you will solve a lot of your problems. How many members are there on the HAMB? Ryan, if it's not about the money I would say you stand to take in a rather large chuck, coupled with the auctions the members donate to you, wow, the potential is staggering. Ok, that's my take so go ahead and get pissed and ban me. I would say if you do that I have hit a nerve.
I am not sure what this would accomplish. Let's look at my history for example. So far, I have posted a few WTB classifieds and no FS classifieds yet in 8 or 9 months. And I have probably posted a few replies to other HAMBer classifieds. I would probably not have paid to post my piddling WTB's. And like I said, I have not posted any FS's yet. Therefore, your proposed change in policy, as applied to me, would have resulted in $0 revenue and a reduction of maybe 6 posts. I personally am willing to pay. BUT, I am worried that this proposal would reduce the number of classifieds and thereby reduce the utility or value provided by your site. I would suggest instead that you try out blocking any replies and bttt's in the classified section.
I would gladly pay for classifieds access, I have only bought items for my projects-a lot of them.I have no intention of reselling. I also think the moderators do an excellent job, but I have no idea of how much work this is. the only problem with locking the seller's post is if he is inaccuratein his discription or may not know the application(years, models, makes). Sometimes I have inquired for my own edification, sometimes because I am certain there are others that may need clarification, thanks mark.
I like the 15.00 fee that was suggested. This will weed out all the tire kickers you see at the local swap meet.
the system on torboford is that you kick %1 of your sale to the Board. it is a loose rule but basicly if you sell alot then you pay a little more. plus 1% ain't dick. yeah if you sell your $15K car on it you owe $150 so maybe have a cap on it like 1% up to $10? Also I kinda would like to see the wanted and forsale section split if possible.
Why dont you just charge for the adds-period! My car is for sale here and because of the price, I havent had any responses from here. Lets face it you guys are true jalopy guys and are very happy with a simpler form of cars and thats cool!
hhummm,.. I'm a FNG,.. so I'm not sure if MY opinion even counts. I like the site because it's a good place to ask people for their advice,.. meet folks in your area, etc. I think charging just to come in and look, chat, etc. is a BAD idea. Seems to me that would just drive folks AWAY,.. and it might kill the site in the long run,.. or at the very least force people to go and hang out at other sites that are free...?? I know sites like this cost a little... but on the other hand that was a 'known' thing before (whoever that built this) even designed and posted the site. Seems to me it would be a shame to ruin one of the nicest sites with some of the most friendly and helpful folks I have come across. Like someone else suggested,... I'd suggest doing away with 'post counting'. Lets face it,.. some folks just post jibberish to see how high they can get their 'number'. That will cut down on nonsense post and lower cost in the long run IMHO. Also as far as the classifieds go,.. maybe have them where someone can post something,.. but if they want to DISCUSS IT, have questions about it, need more clarification, etc... do it via email OFF LINE and not on the board. Have someone post the classified,.. and list their contact info (email address) I'd also split up WTS, and WTB/WTT just for ease of looking up items. Lets face it,.. what a better place to get parts,.. cars, etc we are all looking for than in a general; place we are all interested in. We all buy car or trucks,.. come up with extra part we don't need,.. and are GLAD to sell them to folks like our friends here who might be able to use them. just my 2 cents,... hope this new guy didn't step on any toes.??
No you didn't step on toes, but if you go back and read ALL the rules, you would see there are several rules about PM'ing (private messaging) questions or comments etc. As far as a fee for the classifieds - plain and simple, there are some guys who have abused the classifieds by scamming people and not giving a crap. So, you weed out the scammers where $ 15.00 is a pain and for those who come on here for the cars and parts, it ain't no big deal. Also- there is no one on here that is paid anything, but has grown in size to the point where to keep it going with updates and equipment could be a full time job. Ryan has done a hell of a job and it will take much more time to keep it building. Think about it. Cob Forum Moderator
i was thinking about something similar. charge a percentage of the price. say 5% whether the item sales or not... there was a site I used to go to that the thread starter was the moderator of their own thread. that way if the item sold, they could delete the thread.
Cob, The idea is good but the approach isn't. You can't be that nieve to think by charging a fee for classifieds that you can weed out those blood suckin' scammers. It just won't happen. The best approach I have heard yet would be to direct all response to the seller's e-mail address, thus freeing up a lot of unneeded comments and as I said before get rid of the posting counting. I can see absolutely no benefit in using it other to see some of the what-a-be's on here boost there numbers. You have posted a join date which should tell anyone your tenure on this forum. As far as a fee, the suggestion to perhaps charge 1% or so would be a good idea rather than just blatantly hit every member a fee. You and I both know there are a lot of lurkers on here that are either to shy to do a post or to do anything besides look for a part. That's not bad. Just remember everybody started new at one time and I think if you look at this as a brotherhood instead of a dictatorship with rule this and rule that you will by design eventually weed out the undisireable element. As my wisdom filled grandmother used to say, "never berate a good debate, whether it's to your liking or not, as you will always get something positive from it". Oh, by the way, I for one think this forum is by and large the best thing going with greatest group of folks for old school type hot rodders and custom folks to carry on the tradition. And keep em' comin by not being so damn hard on newbies. If they wanted hazing they would have joined a fraternity. All my ratings are just observation.
Dickster, First of all, A fee was being discussed. Nothing is set in concrete. While you will never eliminate scammers,it weeds out those who are by getting their payment info. 100% scam free - no/ but it can scare the guys who need that $ 15.00. This is a free privledge that has been set up for all to enjoy with a small list of rules to live by that are not difficult to understand IF PEOPLE WOULD JUST READ THEM AND RESPECT THEM. Second you can discuss your dictatorship comment and rules with Ryan. The rules are his rules. He is the creator of this Brotherhood. Before rules were in place, the classifieds were TOTALLY out of hand and needed some organization. MANY a good car guys came on who were ripped rightoff the bat and didn't come back, so cleaning up the ripper - pack was in order. I'm here to help any fellow H.A.M.B.'r who requests it. If you need my help with anything Dickster just ask and I'll assist and fellow brother H.A.M.B.'r from the hood. Cob Forum Moderator
enjoy the new classifieds system fellas... we worked really hard on it and i hope it helps a bunch of you guys out.... certainly a work in progress, but i am real excited to see how it runs from here on out.
I guess I don't understand the "getting ripped off" concept..?? I've bought and sold stuff nationwide for 20+ years, from parts to whole cars. (well before eBay was every conceived. I guess what I am getting at is this... there has ALWAYS been some people out to screws some other folks. It's up to YOU to protect yourself. I don't think it's a product of technology, web sites, or anything like that.. it's just they are another vehicle people can use. IMHO people should always sell stuff C.O.D,... (or in some like fashion) so the seller and buyer are both protected. I don't think (as much as we would like to think so) a web site, or anything else is 'really' able to protect people from scammers. MOST all of us are honest... it's the "few" that make all of us 'leary' of everyone as a whole. I guess to this point I have been lucky. SO far I have never lost a dime in a sale. But there is always a chance??
You my friend are 100% right. We are responsible for ourselves only. I have always stated when I sell something that I will sell it COD or I will sell it by a USPS Money order only and I won't ship it until I have cash in my hand from the USPS money order. Cob Forum Moderator
