I've been having an issue with my 57 Chevy truck for awhile. I have to jump start it from another car. It runs and drives great but when I turn it off sometimes it won't start back up. Sometimes it will if I start it right away but if it sits for a few minutes it won't start. The alternator is new. The battery is new and when I took the battery to a couple places to charge it they said it was fully charged. Any ideas on what this could be? Wiring? Connections? Starter?

Next time it happen's try starting it with a screw driver at the starter. If it turn's over your start wire is bad and needs replacing. If it doesn't, possibly only the solenoid is the issue, then it could be a bad starter motor also. At that point remove starter and have it tested. Also, before checking the starter. Do you have an automatic trans with a safety neutral switch ? If so, the safety switch maybe bad. Good luck

When you say it wont start, does that mean when you turn the key, it will crank and not start, or when you turn the key, and it wont crank over at all??
If it wont crank over at all, do what "Johnny Gee" suggests, plus maybe check all electrical connections, maybe the ign switch as well..
If it cranks and wont start, is it flooding while sitting for those few minutes???

Did you check the battery terminals? Even one a little loose can create that problem.

Good catch. There appears to be a voltage drop just the same. It will start by jumping it. I've seen bad solenoids do this. If it still has points in it, the resistor by-p*** "R" terminal will not give the coil enough voltage. One needs to understand that the solenoid is also a combination relay switch to power up the starter motor plus give extra voltage to the coil. The magnetic portion of it makes everything work together.

  6. I had a GM that would not start except sometimes when it was hot. I knew that everything was good, I even wrapped the starter with a heat blanket and tried cooling it off etc before starting it. it turned out to be a cracked field.

A cracked field? typo?? It has automatic trans. I will check the neutral switch as well as try starting with a screwdriver. Thanks for the suggestions.

The field is a part of the starter.

As I look up and ask. Why ? Then it came to me. Some people see things differently. [IMG]
