gotta a chance to pick up a fairly decent 28-29 model a sport coupe body, but would rather have a standard coupe, can a standard coupe top be used to "convert" a sport coupe to a standard coupe?
Might be a better idea to try to trade the sport coupe for a regular coupe. In my opinion the sport coupe is more desirable, more rare. But they aren't that desirable for chopping/channeling,no fenders, etc. I think you would come out ahead getting what you want to start with even if you have to get the sport coupe and trade it.
I was in the same boat and got a pretty solid 28' sport coupe for a great price. I've got the roof from a 30-31... I know it won't be quite "right," but I'm going to do it. Do it.
I may have a chance to get this 30 Sport Coupe from a friend. It has been in his family since day 1. The car has 500,000+ miles in it...the engine has been rebuilt 8 times and it runs like a clock. Look at the patina, age and all the little goodies on this car. He was doing the brakes for like the 50th time when I shot these photos. Look at the 1930 manual and paperwork info in the passenger door...LOL I'd keep it just the way it is...Sport Coupes are neat and this one is a good example. Murph
Murph - that sport coupe is neat, if my car was in anywhere near the shape of that one, I would keep it a sport coupe no question. My car is quite incomplete, and tracking down all of the sport coupe specific pieces could be painful ($$$). yblock - I will. I'm probably years out from any serious body work, just finishing up the parts collecting phase and starting some work on the chassis and drive train. Anyone have a set of coupe or sedan door tops? The previous owner apparently had visions of a coupester... both sets of doors have been relieved of their tops.
If you don't already have the standard coupe top. It will take a while to find one ,unless you are realy lucky.on the good side a standard coupe top will bolt right on. Good luck
HI guys i just got a 1928 sports coupe conv top this car has full doors can a HALF door fit this modle?would like to remove the full doors for the sumerand the top.like i said just got it so i dont know if this is possible. thanks HERMAN
I almost got my hands on a sport coupe a few years ago. If I had or do it will look like this one that belongs to HAMBer helmsville.
I wish I had pics but I used to have a 29 sport coupe body that I had bought. I also had the pieces to a 28-29 leatherback coupe laying around. One day I sold the parts and body to my boss and he paid me to weld it up into a regular coupe. I did that and it came out alright but then he traded it for a 42 chevy hearse.
Right now I'm in the middle of converting a Leather back(or special coupe) into a standard coupe. Converting a leatherback is a little easier than converting a sport coupe, but it can be done with a bit of work. You might have better luck finding the side pieces of a leatherback and the rear window section of a sedan, rather than a standard top.
On a '28/'29 it's a straight bolt up to convert a Sport Coupe to a Standard Coupe. Did it myself many years ago. in fact the roof cost me more than the rest of the body ..............................................................David
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, oh by the way does anyone happen to have an "extra" 28-29 coupe roof just laying around?
Sorry to bring up an old thread but I'm about to do the same thing and I'm curious as to how it went?
It went the way I think a lot of these projects go - still sitting in the back of the garage. Maybe I can find some time next year to play... such is life.
I had this sport coupe and I filled in the roof with cut-down 30-31 Tudor sedan pieces. It's not 100% original but it fit fine, you have to take like 19" out of the window opening and another 10 or 11" out of the flat rear part. I didn't have the body lines figured out yet but I don't think that would have been that tough, top wasn't fully welded on at this point. I sold it and the guy who bought it had some coupe quarter window pieces so I don't even know if he'll end up using the pieces I made, but it's his baby now.
