Is there some type of conversion kit that will allow me to convert a canister type oil filter to a spin on? On my '60 Edsel we recently swapped out the original 223 straight 6 with the spin on kind to another 223 out of a late '50s Ford truck with the canister type and I would like to switch it back to a spin on one if possible. I couldn't find one on the Mac's site so if they don't have it who does? Thanks....

Is there some kind of factory adapter on the Edsel motor you could reuse?

Look for conversion kit for a Y-Block. Same oil filter and I think it should work on the six also. Have heard that it can sometimes be found at NAPA. Good luck with it.

I was told that I can remove the threaded piece and the backing plate from my old engine and put them on the new engine so I unscrewed the threaded piece that the filter screws onto but I'm not sure how to remove the backing plate so I wanted to ask before I damaged it. Do I pry it off with a small screwdriver or is there another way? Thanks....

The little plate comes off it is stuck on the gasket, you'll need a new gasket it is the same as the gasket with the orginal cartridge filter.

I figured out how to pry it off and I got the rubber gasket off too but damaged it in a small area. Do you know where I can buy just the gasket or do I need to buy the cartridge filter just for the gasket?

Before I changed the Y-block in my 56 Victoria for a 351 Cleveland, I switched to a spin-on filter (first used in 1957) because the back plate had cracked, and let the oil flow back into the filter. Result was 0 oil pressure on start-up. I think I got the 57 parts (plate, threaded stud and gasket) from the Ford Dealer, but that was many moons ago. NAPA would likely be a better source, or a supplier who deals in NOS Ford stuff. It's a VERY simple mod. Good luck.

  8. I just did this
I had a 292 and used the pieces of it on the 223
I used the gasket that comes with a canister filter as the gasket for the plate
pay attention to the direction the hole in the plate is

I see the word "top" on the plate so I'll make sure to put it on right. Do you know where I can buy just the rubber gasket or do I have to buy the cartridge filter just to get the gasket? Thanks....

What about a neoprene black O ring from an industrial supply shop?

I'm not kidding. That's probably their minimum charge because what does it weigh-one ounce? The rest of it is their handling charge I guess. I checked with 4 local auto parts stores and none of them had it so I didn't have much of a choice....

The washer arrived today but unfortunately I stripped the bolt that holds the original backing plate to the block so now what? I didn't have a socket that big so I bought a 32 mm one at Advance and that stripped it some so I decided that I should buy a big box wrench so I returned the socket and bought a 1 1/4" box/open end wrench and managed to strip it a little more with that. That bolt is on there REALLY tight. I said screw it and just put the old canister filter back on and it leaks a little just like it did before. So now my question is should I just live with the leaky canister filter or is there some way to get that stripped bolt off so I can install the other bolt for the spin on filter?
