So I have had a couple people contact me through email only not the hamb site. Attached is a picture are these scams? Sure seems like it as they wont send any pictures of the parts.
Where is this guy located that he cannot upload pics, hell I used to upload pics with dial up back in the day. We actually uploaded an entire E zine monthly with dial up before one of the fellas got a cable connection.
hamb guys don't know what isp bandwidth is...but scammers know a good BS line when they find one. Scam all the way.
That's what I was actually thinking there has been two people so far try this and when I asked for pictures they just assured me it was in perfect condition. We are talking Model A parts here the stuff is old and if you find a part in perfect condition it's like the holy grail. However I do understand some of the older gentalmen on here are not very tech savy and was giving them the benifit of the doubt just seems fishy.
Two things always raise white flags for me: 1. Email contact 2. Don't accept paypal Never, ever do a deal online without using paypal...
I'm skeptical of everything anymore, and if it doesn't ''appear'' right and doesn't jive....I walk away! Communication is key with me and openness from the get-go.
Red Noddle Sauce in stead of Rednoodlesauce? Another give away tip. No pictures, no deal. Even then, you need a way, daily local newspaper in the photo?-to make sure the photo is not from somewhere else. However, please feel free to send me the money for the parts. I won't send them to you either, but at least you'll know it went toward building a hot rod !
JUSTIN,,,,you made a mistake in your "Wanted"ad...go back and edit your phone number out,,,make them contact you by PM here on the HAMB.
Yep and don't send your payment as a gift, that is a very old scam. Makes sure that you are paying for what you are getting. Never pay with a moneygram, even if you are buying something from me. In the US check or money order is OK as long as you have a physical address, don't send anything to a post office box. Last but not least if you have a physical address and it feels hinky google maps is your friend.
I have been contacted several times via phone by individuals who are responding to a ad posted looking for information on a particular vehicle. These guys speak english are from here in the US. The first guy indicated that he has some cars for sale and a friend of his saw my ad on the site and suggested that he call me. Well this guy is from New York city and claimed to have a couple of cars that sparked my interest. He sent me some real hazy pics of one of the cars. I asked for more pics and he indicated that his grand son was the one taking the pics and posting them on the e mail for him. This guy was well versed on car guys names and about cars in general. I asked about the second car and he indicated that it was in a warehouse and he will get me some pics the next week . Well after several phone conversations he sent me pics of a car but not the one that he indicated that he had . This clam was taking pictures off pages of some old car magazine and sending them. I told him that I was going to fly down for a visit and do have his address where he lives. That was the end of that. The other guy lives in California and claims that he inherited this car from his grandfather and he was not a old car guy. Just wanted to sell it and move on. Well his number was also a good number to call back at. I told him also that I was going to be in the area next week and I call him and left a message that I was planning to stop buy. Never herd back from him. Just a note to be care full and do your homework. Vic
I put my email in ads, and am glad that I do. At least once a week I get an email that starts out with " I tried contacting you by PM but either you aren't getting them or I'm doing something wrong". Now, I'm sure it's probably the later, but regardless, if the email wasn't there, we both lose out. I'm more than happy to give out my number in pm or email, but never out in the open, I get about 5 telemarketers every day as it is.
Sounds like when I need a motor and trans for the 56 buick station wagon. Guy P.M. me and said he had a good motor and trans and even sent me a picture of this beautiful 56 buick he said he was going to pull it from. I asked why would he ruin such a nice car for that he said his wife had cancer and need the money. I am in East T.N. He was in Texas{he even gave me an address}I said I had a brother in law that lived 30 minutes from him and he would come over and listen to the motor. I NEVER heard from him again. You got to be careful out there.Bruce.
I had a guy send me a bank check overnight using fed ex. my gut feeling was something was wrong. I google searched the bank. that panned out. I called the bank giving them the nine didgit routing number. that showed the check was fake. busted.
Nothing new, scammers love to target hambers, especially the wanted ads and always have the part your looking for at a unbelievable price but can't upload photoe to send's for some unknown reason. They don't have a paypal account,so you have to send a money order or pre loaded visa cards. Members here have been scammed, they seem to loose common sense when someone has the part they need for their project. Try to remember ,,No photos & paypal = Red Flag. HRP
Now I feel like a scammer because I don't have Paypal. I don't want them having access to my bank account and I am not savvy enough to do it anyway other than Postal Money orders.
Don,you have been a member of the hamb for years and the lack of paypal shouldn't effect your buying anything you want, heck you can use me for a reference. HRP
If a person has been a member here for several years, he's probably legit unless somebody has stolen his ID and is using it. These folks that join up only to try and sell stuff are the ones to avoid. If they haven't been around for a while and posted anywhere besides the classifieds, I stay away from them.
I had a e-mail yesterday morning with the title..".Your red sedan" Seeing this I naturally assume someone is interested in the car I have for sale here on the hamb, when I opened the e-mail I was greeted with red screen and a recording that my computer has been locked and I had to pay to get it released. Man,I was pissed,I still am but with the help of system mechanic I spent the entire day trying to unlock my computer, these scum bags that do this are lower than snake s#it. I lost all my saved passwords but fortunately I had most written down, but some are gone forever. The only place the car is advertised is here and the ford barn,so be careful about opening e-mails,I have removed my e-mail from the classifieds so this won't happen again. HRP
Damn Danny, That sucks! did it happen immediately after opening the email or did you open an attachment? & who is your email provider?
Yes! I was contacted by a guy from California sounded exactly the same said his buddy game him my information and blah blah long story short he couldn't send pics and would not do COD shipping.
There is something about checks that I almost hate to post publicly but I will anyway. On any check from any bank it can be canceled at any time until it physically clears the bank it is drawn on. That, "well you got your funds already deal is bogus." Last year before I traded my Willys for the sedan I had someone from Wisconsin send me a very large sum of money. The deal was once it cleared I would allow the shipper to pick up the Willys. I was not comfortable with the check immediately, it was drawn on a contracting firm in Florida yet it was coming from Wisc. My banker said that we should put a hold on the funds until the check cleared the bank and not just electronically that usually took about a week. The shipper was at my door the day after I banked the check wanting to pick the truck up. I explained it to him and they both the shipper and the buyer began to pressure me. I put them both in contact with my banker who explained that there was a hold on the funds and that I probably would not allow the truck to leave my possession until I had cash in hand. This went on for 5 days, then the bank got the notice that the check had been cancelled.
A fella bought two 36 flattys from me through epay... saying he was picking them up in a hire ute, flying from Western Australia to Adelaide and never showed, i called him up an hour after he was meant to arrive, only to find he had changed his mind (thanks for the heads up that wasted my afternoon[emoji54]). After this annoyence he made a paypal payment and was going to get a freight company to collect them. Beacause of my foot being broken i was unable to get them on a pallet in time. I called paypal to get him a refund, as paypal was going to charge a $27 handling fee and him paying by paypal meant i had no seller protection. I decided to get him to put the money in my account instead.... Turns out his paypal payment was declined anyway and I almost lost the motors and $1,025..... The declined payment didn't show up on my paypal statement. Point is PAYPAL SUCKS! I've also had a guy buy a woodworking machine off me from Sri Lanka (using ePay) . Payment went through via paypal but he didn't pay for the crate that was made for the machine ($60au). I only charged for materials. His plan (scam) was to deposit $10,000 into my account... he then wanted me to forward $9,940 to his friend in Australia by bank transfer.... The scam is, once i transfered the funds he puts in a claim to say he purchased a $10,000 machine from me that doesn't arrive because it never existed, and I'm out $10,000! I also have a friend who purchased a $10,000 car from ePay, once the car was payed for he never heard from the seller again! I'm not sure if this will help anyone at all! But i thought I'd share the scam attempts I'm aware of. Sent from my SM-N910G using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
To: Jim Hutchins "I'm having ethical difficulties with sending you money for a part I can't see. But trust me, my cash is in excellent condition. Though you'll never see it."
