Hi Has anyone ever tried to fit a Ford 302 to a standard Fairlane gearbox? I have a 58 Fairlane, with the 332 FE block, due to the cost of geting parts to the UK and as the 302 is more common here, I am considering replacing the FE with a 302. WIll the 302 mate to the gearbox, or is there a conversion kit I can use, as I'd rather not replace the whole transmission.
I put a 6 bolt 289 in a 312 powered 57 Fairlane by cutting down the trans input shaft housing to the 289 bell housing hole size and drilling the bell to the 57 trans pattern. The 57 trans had narrower 5 bolt 289 pattern. I used 64 Comet motor mounts on the 312 frame brackets, bolted right in,used the stock 57 clutch linkage as I remember (this was in 1971 or so).
Sorry, mate, I think you're probably out of luck other than swapping out the box too. I should think finding a C4 or AOD would be easy enough though...
There is no conversion of your automatic. Everything is different. Bolt pattern, starter, converter, flywheel, you name it.
Thanks guys, Now I have to work out which is best. 302 & new transmission or Rebuild the FE? Considering the part availability in the UK and the cost of importing ... Hmmm, more research needed.
