I like it simple too, solid colors all the way. Although my Ford interior was done in metallic black (2012 Malibu color). I use VHT roll cage & chassis black in rattle cans quite a bit too.

Congrats - details can be debated forever - you accomplished what you set out to do with good results - can now put a notch in your paint gun handle - most important is to get it out on the road and enjoy the thumbs up for a good looking ride

Here is the thing......I was faced with selling some of my assets to pay for a paint job, or dive into it. Very frankly I'm utterly amazed at how good the hood and the "lower lip" looks. My motive in posting this is to encourage you guys who have a bit of adventure to jump off the cliff and do it yourselves rather than pay thousands of dollars to a "professional" to paint your car. Yes, it CAN be done with lots of elbow grease (I just noticed in the mirror this morning that my forearms seem rather muscular now from the hours and hours of sanding...ahhaha)...but my arthritic fingers are bitching at me........

It's taken over five years - nearly every day. Stay with it. Sooner or later it will be on the road!

I started with my Ford almost 2 years ago... and I was a bit rusty, not the car. I was hesitant to jump into new things at first, now I face any challenge and get through it. Paint is where most guys freeze up and I was right there with them. I picked up a couple of quarts of paint, some supplies... at the worst I was out $190... not the most expensive blunder I've had on this build.

I'm getting close to beginning my black paint job, probably semi-gloss as I'm not a body man by any stretch of the imagination and I'm tired of rattle can black primer fading over the course of the summer. Anyway, I was thinking of spraying my own color as the local cheap shops have REALLY expensive prices any more. What happened to the $299 special paint jobs? Just EPA cost add-ons?

Perfectly good threads get closed and deleted all of the time, because people cannot follow the handful of rules on this board.

I agree with everything you say 49 ford coupe, just went thru all your pics and gotta say the paint came out great.
like you I dived in the deep end and painted my jailbar and it came out great,in fact I was so pleased with the outcome that I decided to paint my present project in metalflake,as they say "if you don't have a go..you never know"
so far I have not made the same mistake twice,i just make new mistakes:pbut I am getting there.my point is...you have nothing to lose..
if it don't come out right....sand it and do it again....besides sanding is exercise and that is good for you....what ever you have a go at then becomes a new skill and that is what life is about.
    oh yeah....luv your car

While modern regulations have caused an increase in costs, most of the cost of a paint job is the prep work. Those $299 (used to be $99)jobs don't prep the car. Actual time spraying is very short compared to the hundred of hours you can have getting it ready.

Nice write up including the advice to calculate the amounts of paint and thinner to use.

Thanks, loudbang. I will have some left over but that's ok. So far I've spent just about $700 on supplies, and I've never been able to find any info on paint quantities in all the YouTubes and forums that I've researched before jumping into this. If I had it to do over again (the math), I'd have probably measured the surface area of the car and projected the amount of paint from the fact that one front fender took 70 ounces of paint/clear to complete it (10 ounces per coat) plus primer, or about 80 ounces.

One of my favorite sound deadners right there. Great company I've used them for car audio competition vehicles, along with my old cars. I am wanting to try and paint the roof of my 63 Catalina at home so I'm glad you started this thread.

  30. Like your work, looks great for a 1st timer. The 49 looks Kool. I feel the only judge you have to please is yourself. There are +'s for the cheaper guns and for the high dollar guns. The professional are running a business and they use equipment that should be accurate, reliable and durable. My .02 cent. I have used Binks, DeVilbiss siphon type guns. Today, I use inexpensive primer gun and turbine paint system all are HVLP for my restoration business.
