I have a 31 Model with the stock engine. It has supposedly been rebuilt and resleeved at some point recently. I adjusted the valves and that didnt help the noise go away. It wasn't really a ticking noise anyway, it is more of a clanging sound. When i hit the gas in neutral or gear at a certain higher rpm it starts clanging. It does it more easily when in gear. When the rpms go down in a higher gear it starts going away. Any ideas what it might be,? Bad resleeve job perhaps?
Just a couple of ideas.. Where is the timing set?? Pre ignition/pinging ?? Maybe piston slap, (but that rattle usually decreases as the engine heats up} Possibly the piston (thrust side) ***embled on the wrong side of conrod..
Wat was the last thing you did before the "clanging" started (or maybe it came to you that way)? Any chance one of the bolts holding the starter on is too long and hitting the flywheel? This would be a good question for fordbarn.com. Charlie Stephens
I had an A engine I got in a doodle bug that ran real nice but had a heavy ticking noise when revving up or coming back down rpm wise. It was just an old engine no claims of being rebuilt or anything. I noticed the crank had excessive end play but putting a hammer handle on the crank pulley to take up slack didn't make the noise go away. I put a little pressure on the cam gear while it was running a the noise was gone. the cam was slapping back and forth making the noise. Probably never happen to anybody else but might check crank end play and cam ****on. D Smith
