Anybody have secret concoction for cleaning old varnished fuel out of a gas tank. I was thinking about putting some E85 in it and putting it (sealed up) in the back of my truck and drive around with it for a few days, rinse and repeat a couple of times. Any thoughts?
Go to Home Depot and you can buy the 2 pk. of Muratic Acid for less than $10. Pour a gal. in the tank and slosh(sp) it around and around and around and pour it out and pressure wash it and get it dry quickly because it will flash rust. Then pour a 1/4 gal of WD40 and slosh it around and empty. Cost$15.00 This my tank from my '59 Dodge and it was nasty. Radiator shop gets a $150 for a tank cleaning. I don't like the coating **** that people sell because it breaks down.
Take the tank to a old fashion radiator shop and let them hot vat it overnight,it will be as clean as a whistle. HRP
I'll second that. I'm running one from 1924 with no problems after a radiator shop hot vac & some Redcoat sealer.
For people on limited income and can still work the Muriatic acid is fine. Word of caution: Do not stick your snoot anywhere near it or you'll wake up wondering WTF. Keep your nose in case you get lucky with a good looking split tail. OR go spend $150 at radiator shop and you won't get no split tail because you gave it to a bunch of hard ons at the shop. I've had a radiator shop boil 1 of mine in my '60 Plymouth. I also had it coated which started turning loose inside my tank. BIG problems
For $150 bucks I can buy a new tank, it's not all that rusty inside just has a layer of varnished fuel on the bottom. I know that coating stuff doesn't last and the ethanol in today's gas likes to dissolve anything that isn't metal.
The radiator shop I use charged me 30 bucks, heck all they do is drop it in the tank and let it cook overnight. If you use muriatic acid be extremely careful, breathing it is hazardous and from experience don't leave it in your shop, somehow the axid leaked and the vapor can cause any metals to rust. HRP
