Anybody here able to ***ist me, either by offering their services or recommending a suitable transport firm? I need to transport a 1932 Ford Pickup. Dis***embled and mounted on two trolleys with wheels.
Cab with wooden rolling stand dimensions:
    Width---55", Length---52", Height---74"
Bed and wooden rolling stand dimensions:
    Width---54", Length---71", Height---72 1/2"
    Total weight 1200lbs.
from San Juan island, WA (right up near Vancouver) to my shipping agent in LA.
It's 1265 miles plus there is the one hour each way ferry trip to the island.
    Thanks
    Ed

Can anyone from WA recommend me a transport firm?

  3. You have several issues to deal with.

For starters, the manner in which the sections are mounted on rolling stands is probably not suitable to be winched into a trailer.

The cost to ship a tow vehicle and enclosed trailer from land by ferry out to where this is and back is going to be one hell of an expense.

If you have not already paid for this vehicle, I would make a condition of the sale to have the seller take responsibility to bring all the contents to an agreed-upon location in Vancouver.

You might want to consider shipping from the Seattle Port instead of taking it all the way down south to the Long Beach port.

Depending on your method of shipping and what secure methods are available for the container you plan to put this in, you may have to build a very stout crate out of materials that are acceptable for import into your country up in Vancouver.

Different countries have different regulations for the type of wood for example that can be used to build a shipping container or crate.

Your shipping agent should be able to advise you as to what specific materials are acceptable for export and import purposes to p*** customs.

The last thing you want to do is build more than one shipping container before you even leave the port here in the states.

You want direct and enclosed transport for this.

You do not want to put this on an open trailer and you do not want to put it into the commercial drop shipping network where it will be damaged and or parts will go missing.

This all starts with your seller, you need to contact them and see about getting this project to Vancouver from the island

Bist du verrueckt (are you crazy), Mensch? San Juan Island - was just there last September with my gearhead cousin from Portland (both of us with German parents, BTW). Everything's in and out on the ferry. The cost for a ferry ride for a dualie pickup was bad enough, but add a trailer? And if you ship through Vancouver BC, you'll more than likely be dealing with customs another time. You might want to contact a shipping agent and see if you can get them into a small container on San Juan Island and prep for direct shipment via Vancouver zum Deutschland. Or look for a better deal in the eastern USofA/Canada.

  5. Taking it 3000 miles overland to the East Coast to ship out would be cost prohibitive.

If you can ship direct from San Juan Island - that would be best.

Well I've already bought the truck. And the shipper I always use ships out of LA. Actually LA to my shop in Germany won't be that expensive. The difficult part is getting it to LA. But there must be transport companies in Seattle who do this sort of thing.

He doesn't post on here often but a friend of mine who is on here lives and owns a business on the north end of Whidbey island near Annecortes might be able to pick or have someone pick up the truck and pieces and get them to his shop where it would be a lot simpler for a shipper to pick them up.
The ferry fares aren't cheap for trucks and trailers as Yutan Flash said. For ferry costs scroll down to the Annecortes/ Friday Harbor section. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/pdf/CurrentFares.pdf
I went back and looked and it appears that it's just a cab and bed on separate carts so it may not take a real big truck and or trailer to haul it. I'd go along with having the seller deliver it to the mainland to a shipping point or to where it can be picked up. That saves a ton of h***les with the shipper that has to haul it to LA.

  8. Ed,

Why are you not dealing with the seller in getting the truck pieces off the island and over to the mainland?

He did not sell this to someone who lives on the island, in fact he sold this to someone who lives in another country.

The seller is who should be ***isting you.

I agree 100% with Truly Vintage. Unless the sellers add said it had to be picked up on the Island. It would fit on my flatbed but for me that is over 100.00 in gas each way plus the ferry ride plus time. I live about 240 miles from the ferry dock at Annecortes. My friend lives ten miles from it.

  10. Ed,

So you have a selection of choices ....

Have the seller ***ist you in locating a freight company on the island where the parts are to prepare them for shipping and use that source to ship at least to Vancouver if not to your Los Angeles exporter.

If the seller will not do that - you can enlist the aid of your exporter in Los Angeles to make those arrangements.

You can PM the members here who are located in the area directly and see if they are willing to do this for a price you can agree upon.

In my years of transport, I have learned that anything can be picked up anywhere and delivered to anywhere provided someone is willing to pay the cost that it takes.

Maybe you can ship it by Fastenal , they have a store in Anacortes, WA 98221, if you can get it there

I use them all the time for motors and bodies, they ship from store to store

I have no problem with the price. I know it'll cost quite a bit to get it off the island. For some reason (complication I suppose) my export agent won't pick up from an island. Also it would all fit in a large box van. I trailer isn't required as it's only the body. No ch***is at all.

  13. Ed,

No offense - but if you have an ongoing relationship with an export agent and you are a regular customer ...

Part of the agent's job is to handle out of the ordinary
    pick ups for you.

Again - no offense but it would have been a hell of a lot easier and probably cheaper for you to buy a complete running or rolling vehicle and not pieces of one on an island.

Ed- I'm working on getting a non-running vehicle TO an island (!) from Oregon, but I've been on that ferry and I think all you need is someone to rent a U-Haul truck and find a forklift in Friday Harbor. Must be somebody here gonzo enough to make a run to L.A. in exchange for gas money and a plane ticket back north...

My agent is based in Germany. If there partners is CA won't pick up from an island there's nothing anyone can do about it. An no - it wouldn't be cheaper to buy the truck we want complete. It wouldn't be exactly what we want would it?

that offer is up for grabs. They can earn themselves a couple of days pay too. If no-one offers I'm going to fly over and do it myself.

It would be wise to find out if the seller has the equipment available to load it on a truck or trailer or at least the man power available. A low car hauler trailer or tilt bed trailer may not be hard to load but a flatbed truck with a bed as high as the one on my 1 ton would be a real challenge.

I've found a company that specializes in Less than a Truck Load shipping to and from the island and have written to them. Hopefully they'll be able to do it. They have a lift tailgate.

San Juan Island is a pretty busy place in the summer, have to get in line early for the ferry out, and even longer to get a return ferry. Seen some larger trucks on the ferry, it would be best to go during a week day.

Best to make reservations for the ferry, 'specially in the summer...

Yes. I found a company - Friday Harbor Freight who agreed to ship it off the island for me.
    Thanks
