Danny, do you remember ever seeing the Roadster P/U in the upper right of this page from an old Hot Rod? Apparently he was (is) from Anderson, S.C. Hopefully he and the truck are still around. Cool looking fender scallops on it, reminiscent of the Ala-Kart.
Hi Don,I have been helping Dave on the confused pickup today. I know a James Harbin but I am not familiar with nor have I ever seen the truck but believe me I'm gonna try to find out about the truck. What year & month was that in Hot Rod Magazine? HRP
That car sat for years at a house on Clemson Blvd. It was in a garage when I saw it. It was after the picture was in Hot Rod when I saw it setting there. Maybe Gary Sanders or Ernie Stone can tell you something about it. I think that picture was from '59 or '60.
[QUOTE="HOTRODPRIMER, What year & month was that in Hot Rod Magazine? HRP[/QUOTE]..............I'm not sure, Danny. Someone posted it in the 75th anniversary of the '40 Ford thread because of the Sedan pictured. I happened to see that the Roadster P/U was from your hometown and thought you might know the fellow. I'm thinking it's probably from 1961 as there are a couple of references in there regarding things that were in the late 1960 issues.
It looks like he was inspired by the Ala-Kart because the scallops on the fenders look so much like those on the Ala-Kart. Did the Ala-Kart win the AMBR award in 1959 and again in 1960? If so, this gentleman may have quickly applied these similar scallops to his P/U. Let us know what you may find out. Hope it's the same James Harbin that you know, or perhaps his Son.........Thanks for responding, Don.
I remember the letter about the 40 Tudor. I bought my 40 Tudor in 62 so my guess is the HR mag was around that time.
How cool would it be if that truck is still there in Anderson, tucked away in some garage, just waiting for someone to bring it back to it's former glory!
What I have been able to find out thus far . My fellow club Gary Sanders doesn't remember Jim but he is a little older than Jim,Ernie hasn't returned my call. The article was published in the February issue of Hot Rod Magazine and James ( Jim) Harbin was a 1959 graduate of Boy's High School here in Anderson,South Carolina. Jim,retired from the Anderson City Fire Department in 1994 after serving 25 years as a engineer He was a Amateur Ham radio operator & made more than 30 flintlock rifles over the years,Jim worked in metal and wood,he also collected knives, antique furniture and antique cars. Jim P***ed away on April 12,2012 in Prescott,Michigan. Knowing where Jim worked I am trying to contact a old hot rod friend that work with the city fire department for many years and he too is retired but I think if anyone would know anything about Jim or his roadster pick up it would be Norman. I am also trying to get in touch with Jim's son's ,one lives in Matthews,North Carolina and the other in Charlotte, North Carolina. I will update if and when I know anything more. HRP
Very cool, Danny. You've been doing some excellent detective work. Sad to hear that Mr. Harbin has p***ed. Hope you can get in touch with both of his sons. Who knows, they may be hot-rodders and may be on the HAMB......Thanks for your work..............Don.
Don,I never heard anything from ether one of his sons,I did finally talk to Norman but he didn't know what became of the truck. HRP
