Technical Anyone with a Jeep or AMC

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1oldtimer, Jul 10, 2016.

  1. Can anyone with a stock braking system Jeep or AMC from 66-76. I need to find out the correct brake tube routing on a master cylinder, which port goes to the front brakes and which to the rear.

If this is too new of a subject please pm me.

If the reservoirs are the same size, then it really doesn't matter.....right?

If they are different sizes (because it has disk brakes up front) then the big one goes to the front brakes.

  3. I think that the front brakes are applying sooner or more then the rears. I've read it could make a difference on port configuration as to which gets fluid first. I found a AMC shop manual online and it states that the port configuration differs depending on bore size. I like to default on what original car configuration is when I use a different master.

Squirrel is right, other than reservoir size it makes no difference, if the front is applying first you may need a metering valve.... However we would need more information to know.

I can check my 1979 Cherokee and 1978 CJ5 tomorrow. On that master, ***uming a firewall mounted application, is the forward port larger than the rear port?

  6. Thanks, this is the older version with both reservoirs the same size.

This picture is from a mustang master cylinder but all you have to do is take off the cap and look inside, you can tell which port goes to the front and back by the hole location.

It is important to figure this out because if it is a disc brake master cyl. There will be a residual pressure valve on the drum brake side. Those old AMC masters did not follow that general rule.

    to figure this out because
