So when I am in third gear just cruising say 2500 or so. I feel a ever so slight buck. It never makes a sound, but I can feel it in the pedal. It's noticeable enough that the wife commented on it, riding shotgun. I am wondering if it is the tripower dripping raw fuel in the intake. It has the Pertronix coil and module. I am suspect of the bases because sometimes I have a high idle and have to kick the accelerator to get it to quit. Also, the throttle blades feel like they are sticking in the bore due to excessive wear. I talked to Charlie Price at Vintage Speed and he thinks all my issues can be remedied with new bases for the outside carbs. Anyone ever experience this?
I'm no expert but if you plan on keeping the trip owe get everything that Charlie has for it. His rebuild kits are the best and have a unique needle valve. I had his complete base kit with linkage and it was top notch. Have you checked the float levels? One thing I found out is if its a little too high fuel will spill over into the intake.
I tried a dozen different bases for my outside carbs and every trick I knew to try and seal them. Nothing worked to my satisfaction. Finally bought a pair from Vintage Speed and they have been working great for the last couple years.
I was working on a few problems. One was a lean surge while cruising which was solved by bigger jets. I'm running a good size cam & domed pistons so it took a couple tries. It also didn't idle right which the new bases fixed. I also had a drip problem that a combination of fixes cured. Most related to running 94's. You need a fuel pressure regulator and adjust it to no more than 3psi. They tend to flood with more pressure than that. Next is spacers to keep the heat away from the carbs. They will drip after you shut it down when hot. Finally I had to adjust the float level lower than the spec to keep it from dripping when I shut it down hot. Gets hot here in Az. as it does in Ok.
