I always think the same thing whenever I see a '57 that color!

 

Only a moron scraps classics in this day and age, its like swapping a bag of hundred dollar notes for a bucket of dimes !

This is one of the rarest 1934 BB Ford trucks in existence. This is a local factory cab, the ribbed roof, lack of visor and half doors were unique to these Australian models. A timber frame has kept rust to a minimum in this cab.

 

American version from the same yard for comparison. It looks to be a 32 or 33.

 

Another local version, the indentation of the rear swage line is just visible.

 

This one is the most complete ones I have ever come across luckily its to be preserved in as found condition. Its now under shelter.

Interesting to note that it appears to share the same doors as my 29' Chevy roadster. Long shot but are any of these available for parts? Finding Chevy open car stuff here in the states is hard and there are some things I'm still looking for.

 

I believe the American-built cab is a '33. '34 beltline across the back of the cab is different, '34 had the extra wide band across the back of the cab. '32 firewalls bolt in, '33 and later are welded in. I do like the looks of those Aussie cabs. Wonder if the builders of the Aussie cabs started with a commercial cowl like the ones used for school buses, fire trucks, etc.

 

This is artwork. It would make a nice calendar.

 

Owner is getting ready to sell some land he inhearited. He said he wants to give this 1941 Mercury away but the only catch is you can't part it out. You have to restore it and promise to give him a ride when you're done. It used to be his grandpa's. No problem! I volunteered, of course. And I would have kept my word. It seems to be a big job but mostly complete.

Then he says I'd have to be willing to spend at least $50,000 on the restoration. Correct me if I'm wrong, but since the car is a four door, it wouldn't be worth more than $15,000 to $20,000 perfectly restored, would it?

Also, since I've only restored one car, I'm "under-qualified."

I just hope he doesn't run short on time or get frustrated trying to find someone to fit his criteria and let it go to the scrappers.

Anyone who's done a few restorations want to take this on?

 

Right you are the protruging cowl is a dead give away. As far as the Aussie cabs go, I think the cowls between the American and local trucks were interchangeable and some did end up on school buses and fire engines. I think I read the total output for commercial vehicles by Ford Australia was around 3000 for 1934. That's trucks, buses, utilities and vans. Many of the BB trucks used open timber cabs built around the cowl. This was still a common practice for Ford GM and Chrysler over here well into the mid thirties.

 

I've got one of those cowls laying around ,it is all steel no wood and looks so much like a roadster pickup American body cowl ,not a passenger car type as I have both and the differences is lots ,maybe the half door skins are roadster pickup type as well ,our roadster door skins appear to interchange with US ones just wooden framed as is most aus body's from Ford Geelong

 

It's uninformed and unrealistic thinking like that which is responsible for the vehicular neglect and the reason for this thread.

 

Funny how someone wants to "give" a project that is worth a few hundred bucks at best in the condition it's in and then demand they spend double or triple its maximum worth for the privilege. He probably wants it a certain way and color too. Anyone taking it on could easily value their time at a reasonable rate and exceed the fifty grand figure just doing a safe cleaned up driver.

 

For some reason I fill the need for one of these.
