Hey guys.. looking for some useful help here. I bought a 60 ford truck a while back that was halfway done and already had the motor installed etc.. and me and my dad were fixing it up.. doing body work and paint and i decided to go with a lowered stance so i purchased a dropped axle from nostalgia sids (after getting recommendations from plenty on here) and new lowered leafs, but while down there i noticed whoever put the motor in made their own crossmember type motor mount (very poorly i might ad) so not only did i want to change that, it also now hits the top of the axle.. any recommendations on a motor mount set up that would work with this set up.. do i need a cross member type motor mount for this style truck or could i just go with a weld in motor mount type.. i'll attach the links to a few products I've found and some pics of the messed up situation. any help would be greatly appreciated from any who have done this swap or are fabricators with good advice.. it's the last step before i can start driving. I'm not the best welder or fabricator, so excuse my ignorance if i've described anything wrong.. i'm trying to learn and get better as i go. I did not install the engine or the motor mount, and should have noticed that before buying, but i guess i liked that the body was in good condition and it ran, and i am still a newbie at all this. haha. thanks again for any advice or help. One last thing.. it does have a cross member underneath the trans bolted from frame rail to frame rail so that helps with the load.. but i don't know if the frame needs to be boxed or if the mount needs to be welded in for the motor as some are bolt in swaps.. i don't know the strength of these frames. i'm not looking to drag race or anything. just don't want my motor to fall out. haha. http://www.tdperformance.com/site/?d=178&dt=108&Keyword=4017&YearID=&MakeID=&ModelID= http://www.speedwaymotors.com/429-460-Ford-Weld-In-Motor-Mounts,7633.html
I've also been hearing that it needs to be boxed and some people say it doesn't. I'm throughly confused
Wow, that motor mount setup is not good. Those speedway type mounts will work, you may need to box a section of the frame where they weld on. Depends on the width of the mounts and how much space you have. Looks like your engine could be raised up a bit also. Support the engine, remove that ugly mess and mock up the new mounts before welding...
I'm a big Ford fan and no stranger to F-100's or F-E's. The truck frame is plenty tough enough without boxing. Personally I would Not go moving the motor around. It just brings a lot more to do that currently does not apply. The mount kit from Speedway probably won't get you where you want to go. The other one is just Block side. Were it me I'd just re work what you have. Remove the round tube completely, Raise the connecting point and move it inboard keeping it as tight to the pan as you can getting to the Dip in the center of your Axle. That should stop the contact with the mounts and I-Beam. What is going on with the spring and rubber bump stop? The Wizzard
I second the question, is the rubber bumper up against the spring? Let's say the cross member was not in the way, what space do you have between the top of the u-bolts and the frame?
CPP has a FE mount for the earlier truck, I wonder if it might work. http://www.classicperform.com/Store/1948_64_Ford_Truck/CP35228.htm Uses these mounts http://www.classicperform.com/Store/1948_64_Ford_Truck/2141.htm
I used the CPP type mount with doing a 390 into a '53 Ford truck years back. It was really nicely made, not from CPP, maybe out of a Whitney catalog. It bolts directly to the chassis and we used stock '64 Ford Galaxie motor mounts.
I think the suggestion above to rework the mount will be the easiest to do. just fyi that speedway link is for 429-460 fords, not the FE. Those are a different family than the FE. ford used the FE in trucks up to 1978, If you didnt want to reuse that motor mount set up you could take a look at factory options and either junkyard crawl or buy replacement stuff from a catalog...
Something is amiss with that front suspension. Have you double did it? IE using two different lowering methods combined? Right now it looks like it's not much different than using a block and bolting the axle to the frame. Look at the engineering and ask yourself, How is that going to work? Springs on the stops? It might be the angle poor photos ect ect but as it looks from here, You have no front suspension!
