I think the buicks they used were 15" Don't want to try & widen the existing ones Just thought maybe there is some 16" later model wheels with the same size center on the hoops as the old ford wheels have???
I'm just thinking ahead--Someday I might want to go with Firestone 890X16 dirt track tires on the rear and they say I would need a 6-8.5" wheel, Don't think they would work on my 4" ones
I have a pair of 16X5 ford script for the rear of my coupe. They were optional on F1 and F100 pickups??? Also there are aftermarket hoops in several widths available for 16 inch Ford discs but I don't recall the vendor right off.
Take a look at aftermarket steel wheels, like white spokes....I have used those hoops for 15". Maybe 16" ones will work too..
I have a couple of old Ford wheels that aren't any too good, but the centers are good---there was a lot of cars & trucks in the 80's & 90's that had 16" wheels---thought if someone had already done this, maybe they could tell me what to look for in the local U-pullit
Ford also made a 16 x 5 F100 truck wheel until the mid to late 60's that had regular centers withoutside hubcap nubs, these hoops can be used on the earlier Ford centers. None of late model stuff has the correct inside diameter for the early Ford centers. I also have a 16 x 5 wheel that has the correct inside diameter for the Ford center that I haven't been able to identify yet, I've been told thats its either a Buick, Olds or Pontiac.
A place that makes or sells implement wheels for use on farm equipment can probably fix you up with just about any width rim you need - ether with bare hoops, to weld to your original '40 Ford centers - or complete ready-made wheels. For 'implement' use both 15 and 16 inch diameters are pretty common, as well as centers with a '5 on 4.5' and '5 on 5.5' patterns. Widths are usually available in about 1/2-inch increments starting from about 3.5 or 4 inches, right through to about 10 or 11 inches wide. Mart3406 ==============
Measure the inner diameter of the rim and go junkyard shopping. You want the dimension as close as possible but you can force the fit or widen the center by bending out the flanges a bit if it is no more than 1/16" out.
Hi there, just been searching the wrecker looking to widen some for my 47 ford PU, original centres measure 347mm and found 16x 5.5 off a FJ40 landcruiser fit perfectly, simple matter of drilling out the rivets and fitting the ford ones. The rivet holes don't quite align so best to stager them a little and plug weld both sets of holes through. Measured hundreds to find them though.
Bumping this back up for some accurate, up to date info on 16" hoops that fit '40 centres...aftermarket or junkyard sourced Sent from my SM-G965F using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I’ve scoured a few local late model junkyards but couldn’t find anything 16” that had the correct inside diameter to fit the early Ford centers. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I think the inside diameter is smaller than the original Ford centers, the centers would need to be turned down in a lathe which would thin down the area where they were originally riveted. 16”x6” and $46 each would be great Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Hey Mike..I Literally just saw this the other day. ID is 342mm and ford centre us about 345mm...so in theory yes the centre could have 1-2mm shaved off. But you will ever so slightly lose the open sections. Sent from my SM-G965F using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I thought ‘40 ford were only one year, at 4” wide, thus quite rare. Why not chop up some later models of the less rare 4&1/2” wide variety ?
The 4" wheels were made in 40 and 41, though the hoops are slightly different between the two. They are slightly rarer than the later 42-48 4.5" wheels. And as said, the centers are the exact same dimension. A little difference here and there around the lug holes (some are innies and some are outties), but they fit in the same place. I wouldn't chop up any wheel that still had a good hoop. But I have cut the bad hoops off a few if they are too bent or rusty. Either year is not hard to find if you know where to look. Now, if a guy can find the 5" or 5.5" wheels then he is getting into the harder to find category.
Is the diameter of the 40 center the same as a wide five center? I used a late model Honda Civic 16x6.5 hoop for the rear of my 39. Fit like a glove.
