Ok so I have a 301 V8 engine with a Turbo 400 in my '57 Chevy truck. Lately when I get my truck up to 45 mph or faster I get a whining noise that gets loud the faster I go. I have checked the fluids and all good. Can't figure out where it is coming from. Any thoughts?? When I am driving and it's whining I put it in neutral and rev the engine and it gets louder. It's weird.
Two things come to mind an those are the alternator making noise or the power steering. Alternator is pretty easy to check as you can unplug the plug and fire the truck up and see if the noise went away or changed. A mechanics stethoscope from the tool display at the parts house helps run down noises too as you can put the probe in different spots and tell if a bearing is bad or somewhat isolate the noise. If you are cheap you can use a length of Old broom handle as a make shift stethoscope.
Sounds like it could be the trans pump whining but I cant understand it not doing it till you get up to 45 or so but then it getting louder when you put in neutral and rev it??? another thought would be to unhook the speedo cable from the trans and see what it does, Ive had those speedometer gauges throw some awful whining or even screaming fits.
Well I unhooked the speedo cable and I got it to whine while the truck was in park so I don't think it is transmission related. . I'm having a hard time pinpointing the noise but I will keep trying to figure it out. The truck doesn't have power steering.
I actually changed the gear oil in the rear end first thing this morning. All vacuum hoses hooked up. It sounds like it might be coming from the front of the engine. Maybe the belt, fan bearings, water pump, ???? It didn't sound like the alternator. I feel a little better now that I know it is coming from the engine when it's in park and not the transmission.
Figured it out yet? As mentioned before take all the belts completely off and start it and see what it does.
