I think in the stock angle and upright with Lee lenses would work.

Upside down would be better to use '56 Chrysler units

Leaned back like above would be better to use Desoto or Lincoln units

56 Chevy are so common, for such an uncommon car... See what else you can at a swap meet or online.

I'm not a fan of the way you have those mocked up at a downward angle, however...

Dang! No one likes it! Good thing it's my car. "Take what you have and make what you want" I love the way it looks.

Count me on your side. I think the overall look is good. The only drawback, is that the chrome bezel is angled down at the top. That will make it look like it was adapted from a different car, as opposed to belonging there. Use what you have, is as traditional as it gets. A Lee lens, or something of that sort will also go a long way to helping the look of it. The stock lens would also be angling down, enhancing the "that looks like it didn't come from the factory that way" look. The bottom of the bezel looks ok to me. If there was a way to extend the top of the bezel to enhance the extended quarter panel, & then get it chromed ($$!!) it would be great.

The Lee lenses will push it over the top when you get the pennies. Won't be another one like it in the world, so you win on that one!

20160628_194341.jpg This is a lot harder than I thought. I spent all day measuring and aligning, all day... And I'm not happy with it. I'm happy with the overall look, but after spending all day measuring... I know now I am definitely going to angle them down way more. *glad I didn't weld today!

(Yes, I am using 56 bel air lights. Sorry everyone)

(Yes I know the bezels will angle down)

This is my first time attempting a taillight swap... Suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you let this crowd make your decisions, you'd never
    1 bought it
    2 cut the roof off
3 welded up the rear doors
    4 sectioned it
    5 everything else you've done
6 everything you're going to do

Do your thing, it looks great. Most people's taste is in their mouth.

  15. So here's my .02 worth. I prefer the angled look much more than strait up mounted. What I see that might have some not liking it so much is where the Chrome Bezel meets the flat top edge of your Quarter extension. Were it me I think I'd keep the tilted angle as you have it but dropping the complete unit down another 1/2 to 3/4 inch lower and give the top edge of the quarter some roll over to eliminate the sharp edge of the panel and housing coming together and complement the angle of the Bezel bringing them together in an arc at the joint. Just food for thought and thinking with the key board.

I don't think the tail lights look bad at all angled. Keep it up!

Would it work if you have the bezels copper coated, then solder a new peak to the top of the bezel? Then have them rechromed. I really like the angle you had them, other than the peak.
    Great job fabricating!

The car was built in Sweden sometime around 1965. Out of a clapped-out used car, using 2nd-hand parts from other clapped-out used cars. I´m sure there were no guidelines to follow at the time, just the intent of having fun w/what was available.
-Back to the matter of the DeSoto.

Badshifter is right on point . This can be a rough crowd at time that's why I don't post to much stuff on here. I think the car as a whole is looking good.

I'm digging the build and will be following. Liking the taillights and the way you're mounting them. The one thing that's driving me nuts though, is that hard angle by the rear seats, when everything else has a nice radius and flow to it. That's all I've got to say, I'll keep my mouth shut now and go back to lurking.[emoji12]

  21. I like the angled look you if when you mocked it up in tape. With Lee lenses I think they will look pretty good....no different really than a 60 Chrysler. The Chrysler lens and bezel would be angled too, so really not much difference. Keep after it, you'll get 'em in a spot that will make you happy. [emoji1][emoji106]

The mock up with it angled looks killer, its your car you've came this far with the section might as well go with what you have on hand especially if you like it. I am sure with your skill you can change it out later if you do not like it.

"If you're going to be wrong, be wrong at the top of your voice." Lucy Van Pelt said something like that. I'm not a huge fan of the angled-down look, (it's better than I thought) but I love the car and your work. You're the one who has to love it, not us, so press on. And post pics. "This is a lot harder than I thought." LOL-that could everyone's tag-line here at the HAMB.

Lean it a bit more, id shoot for the bottom being level. That makes your fin a bit longer (you wanted fins) and makes it blend to the bumper better. Keep at it

  26. I had to take out all of the inside part and just use the outside rim on mine. But I don't have photos.

Hope my comments weren't thought as rough. I don't think anyone is being hard on the OP, just making suggestions. I think it's an awesome build, way beyond my skills. Sometimes when you're so into a project it's hard to be objective, so I feel everyone has given some perspective, which is a good thing. Of course its your ride, do your thing, just along for the ride. Great work.
