Hi guys, I'm excited to join this forum. I just got myself into a 1963 f250. I did the formal introduction stuff in the "introduce yourself" thing. Im new to forums as well and want to make sure I post questions or topics in the right place. If I'm in the wrong place please let me know so I can do thins right on here. Anyways, the transmission I have is an aluminum case, 2 speed mile'o-matic, no vacuum modulator, just 1st and 2nd gear thats all. The engine is a 57, 312 or 292 engine block says ecz-6015-c. The issue I am having is when in drive after the transmission has warmed up, sometimes when im at a stop I can hear a knock the sounds like its coming from the bellhousing and I can feel it knock in the steering wheel. Strange thing is that it doesn't happen all of the time. One thing I have noticed as well is MOST of the time when taking off from a complete stop, I feel a shift in the gas pedal and a clunk like something is shifting into place. It does not do this when I accelerate very slowly. Maybe they are related. The knocking is my main concern. It shifts very smooth between 15 and 20, depending on acceleration, with no noises or clunking. Does it sound like the transmission knocking or the engine?
Check your motor mounts and the transmission mounts. Also check the torque converter bolts for tightness. Report back with your findings.
Thanks for the reply. So when I looked for the motor mounts all I found was the one up front between the engine and the radiator. There are no mounts on the side of the engine? I see where they should be but they are missing. Also, one of the transmission mount rubber pieces has spun sideways. Would any of these cause any issues? Thanks for your reply.
To be honest, I can't tell.... there is a "window" in the bottom of the bellhousing and I tried to look for loose bolts but I dont see any. I dont really know what to look for, I was just going by pictures on the internet and its really hard to find information on this transmission. The one large gear that I can see has no bolts in it. Would pictures help at all? Thanks for the reply.
If the truck has removable floor board, I would take this off and drive around. You can the see if the side motor mounts are allowing the engine/transmission to move around and either hitting the chassis or the clunk is from the motor mounts being worn out.
You need side mounts. I suspect your exhaust system is holding it from twisting too much. Google YBlocksforever, there is a lot of knowledge on that site. I believe some have found cracked flex plates at the crank causing noises. Good luck.
So this is where Im at on everything. I had my idle set to about 500 rpm and at a stop it would knock in drive. I adjusted my idle up to 600 rpm and the clunking went away so my best guess is that the transmission mounts are bad. I think because the engine smoothes out a bit at slightly higher rpm, the transmission is not shift as much, eliminating the knocking. Im probably wrong but it has smoothed out the trans for now so good enough for me at the moment until I can change the mounts. Thanks for everyones help.
