I got a pair to machine for Buick drums and clean up in general...I set one up in the lathe and took a skim cut on flange face..Chips don't look quite like cast iron, more like cast steel...So who knows for sure; what are they made out of?
i've turned many Ford hubs for Buick drums and have noticed that too...your thinking that some are cast iron and some cast steel may be correct
If they were from the late 40's they could be cast from ductile iron. Ductile machines similar to free machining steels in that it produces chips that break up into short pieces. Cast steel tends to produce longer more stringy chips. If the hubs are pre-WW2 then they wouldn't be ductile since it was invented in 1943.
Is cast steel brighter almost silver looking and fine dust? Something I was working on had a different look to it when machining compared to regular cast iron. From what I heard about Henry using the wood crate boards parts came in for floor boards in his vehicles, he definitely was a smart man saving pennies and would be considered an upcycler for his time.
