The early black car should be a '54 not '53 as '53's only came in white. There are rumors that 8 Corvettes were painted black in '54, but I doubt it as I've seen 4 different ones. SS Corvette is kept at the Indy museum, not on display right now as I was there over the Fourth. The black number 283 car is restored as a race car and still exists. The experimental Corvettes have always been favorites of mine. Thanks for posting them.

The Corvette was new off the showroom floor and had only 900 miles on the clock. It was brought to our shop where snow tires were put on all four corners roll bar installed and then off to the races.
A Willys wagon was allowed down the mountain during our run which resulted in a head on crash at Brown Bush.
Car totaled Driver Thom Jamison survived the crash.

That would have been a pricey thing to do in 64 taking a new Fuelie Corvette and make a racer out of it. Can't think any insurance would pay on that wreck.

Your correct no insurance payout, it was sold a week later for $900.00.
I recently did some research and found the car restored and featured in Hagerty's Classic car summer magazine issue in 2013.
It was cool to see it back on the road.

I can't believe that they let the Willys wagon come down the hill in the middle of the race and on those roads at racing speed there was no where to go. That's a very bad situation.

That's a picture of my car from 1968 when Freddy Best owned it. Same car that's in my profile pic, and posted in this thread a couple times. That snippet and photo came from my book "Lost Drag Strips" that came out a few years ago.

  20. That a right hand drive vette? I'd never given any thought to a RH drive vette until seeing that photo. Did Chevrolet deliver them that way, or were they modified to RH after arriving in Australia, NZ, etc?

Starting in 1957, an RPO Wide Wheel (5-1/2") forced the use of the dog dish hubcaps. The reason being that the wider wheel did not have raised nubs on the outer edge required to hold the full size wheel cover secure. The small hubcaps are not unique to corvette. They are the same chrome plated brass stampings as used on the full size Chevys.

I have seen that 56/57 vette at the Macungie Pa. show for at least a dozen years and the AMC behind it. Not a bad show.
